MillaMia Bim Mittens: Knitted Stranded Colorwork Design
What is Being Made
The MillaMia Bim Mittens are a pair of children's mittens designed to fit ages 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 years. This downloadable knitting pattern creates charming mittens featuring decorative colorwork, with a heart motif on the front that can be emphasized using the Swiss darning technique for added visual impact.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project classified at an Improving skill level, making it suitable for knitters with some foundational experience. The mittens are worked flat on straight needles and then seamed together to create the finished garment. The design incorporates stranded colorwork, a technique where multiple colors are carried across rows to create patterned designs. Additionally, the pattern suggests Swiss darning (also called duplicate stitch) as an optional embellishment technique to enhance the heart motif on the front of the mittens, allowing crafters to add decorative detail after the main knitting is complete.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch): The primary stitch used throughout the mittens, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
- Garter stitch: Likely used for ribbed cuffs or edging to provide stretch and structure
- Moss stitch (seed stitch): May be incorporated in certain sections for textural variation
- Stranded colorwork stitches: Standard knit and purl stitches worked with multiple colors held simultaneously to create the patterned design
- Decrease stitches: Techniques such as knit two together (k2tog) and slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over (skpo) are used for shaping
- Increase stitches: Make one stitches (m1 and m1p) are used to add stitches where needed for proper fit
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino yarn, which is exclusively available through LoveCrafts. Specifically, you will need one 50g ball (approximately 1¾oz) in Plum (color 162) as the main color and one 50g ball in Lipstick Red (color 108) as the contrast color. The mittens are worked on 3.25mm (US size 3) knitting needles, and the pattern requires two buttons for finishing. The recommended tension is 25 stitches and 34 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using the specified needle size.
Alternative Colorways
The pattern provides suggested alternative color combinations for crafters who wish to customize their mittens, including Petal (122), Berry (163), Daisy (140), Scarlet (165), Rain (124), Snow (142), and Yellow options, allowing for creative personalization while maintaining the original design structure.
