What Is Being Made

The MillaMia Linn pattern provides instructions for creating two coordinated knitted accessories: a scarf and a matching hat. The scarf measures approximately 14cm (5½ inches) wide by 186cm (73¼ inches) long, making it a generous length suitable for wrapping and layering. The hat is designed to fit an average head size. Both pieces are worked in complementary colorways using the same yarn and needle sizes, allowing crafters to create a coordinated set or choose individual projects.

Techniques Used

This beginner-level pattern employs flat knitting techniques throughout, meaning the pieces are worked back and forth on straight needles rather than in the round. A key technique featured in this pattern is stripe work, which creates visual interest through color changes across rows.

The pattern includes a specialized technique for managing color changes in flat knitting. When the working yarn color is not positioned at the start of the next row due to the previous row's placement, the knitter pulls the work to the opposite end of the needle to return to the beginning of the previous row, rather than turning the work conventionally. This method allows consecutive right-side rows and consecutive wrong-side rows to be worked, accommodating the stripe pattern structure.

For the scarf specifically, a construction technique involves doubling the fabric and sealing it along the long edge through sewing. • For the hat: Two balls in Cinder (201) as the primary color (A), with one ball each of Pink Glaze (223) (B) and Ochre (240) (C) for contrast

Needles: Both projects require a pair each of 4.5mm (US 7) and 5mm (US 8) straight needles. The hat additionally requires a pair of 5mm (US 8) double-pointed needles for working the crown shaping.

Gauge: The pattern is worked to a tension of 18 stitches and 24 rows over a 10cm (4-inch) square in stocking stitch using the 5mm (US 8) needles.
