MillaMia Rosita Jumper
What is Being Made
The MillaMia Rosita Jumper is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed to fit bust measurements from 82-86 cm up to 112-117 cm (32-34 inches to 44-46 inches). This garment features a classic pullover construction with set-in sleeves and a back length to shoulder of 60-66 cm depending on size. The sleeve length is a consistent 46 cm across all sizes. The finished bust measurements range from 100 cm to 134 cm, providing a comfortable, relaxed fit.
Techniques Used
The Rosita Jumper is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create visual interest and structural integrity. The garment is worked flat on straight needles, meaning pieces are knitted in flat rows rather than in the round. Assembly is completed using the seamedmethod, where finished pieces are sewn together. The construction follows a bottom-up approach, beginning with the lower edges and working toward the shoulders and neckline. The most distinctive design element is the extensive use of cables, which are created by crossing stitches over one another using a cable needle to produce raised, twisted patterns that add depth and texture to the fabric.
Stitches Used
The Rosita Jumper employs a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches. Reverse stockinette stitch (also called reverse stocking stitch) forms the base fabric, creating a smooth, purl-textured surface. Cable patterns are incorporated throughout the design, created using specialized cable stitches including Cr3B (Cross 3 back) and Cr3Bp (Cross 3 back purl). These cable crosses involve slipping stitches onto a cable needle, holding them at the back of the work, knitting the next stitches, and then working the held stitches to create the characteristic twisted rope effect. Garter stitch appears on the sleeves, where reverse garter stitch provides a dense, textured fabric that contrasts beautifully with the smoother cable patterning on the body. Standard increases and decreases shape the garment at strategic points.
Materials and Specifications
The Rosita Jumper is knitted using MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran yarn in the colorway Ochre (240). Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size requires 15 balls of 50g weight, while the largest size requires 21 balls. This yarn weight is specifically praised for its suitability to cable work, producing a firm and well-defined finished result.
Three sizes of knitting needles are required to construct this garment: 4mm (US 6), 4.5mm (US 7), and 5mm (US 8). The different needle sizes are used at different stages to create proper tension and fabric characteristics. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitches throughout the pattern.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving proper gauge is critical for this project. Over reverse stockinette stitch on 5mm (US 8) needles, the gauge is 25 stitches and 24 rows per 10 cm square. Over the cable pattern on the same 5mm (US 8) needles, the gauge is 25 stitches and 24 rows per 10 cm square. The yarn's natural properties lend themselves particularly well to cables, creating the firm, defined texture that is characteristic of this design.
Design Characteristics
The Rosita Jumper showcases thoughtful design choices that balance visual interest with wearability. The cable patterns create raised, sculptural elements against the smooth reverse stockinette background. The reverse garter stitch on the sleeves provides textural contrast and a dense fabric that complements the more delicate cable work on the body. The garment is available in suggested alternative colorways including Cinder, Powder Mist, Dusk, and Latte, allowing knitters to customize the finished piece to their preferences.
