MillaMia Tala Jumper: Intermediate Knit Sweater
What is Being Made
The MillaMia Tala Jumper is a seamed knit sweater designed for intermediate-level knitters. This garment is worked flat on straight needles and features a classic pullover construction with set-in sleeves. The jumper is available in seven size options ranging from chest measurements of 76-82cm (30-32in) through to 137-142cm (54-56in), making it suitable for a wide range of body types and ages.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The Tala Jumper employs seamed construction, meaning individual pieces are knitted separately and then sewn together to create the finished garment. The sweater is worked flat rather than in the round, which simplifies the knitting process for intermediate crafters. This flat-working approach allows knitters to easily manage stitch counts and pattern repeats across the front, back, and sleeve sections before assembly.
The pattern incorporates cable stitches as a decorative element, specifically using cable techniques such as C2Fk (cable 2 front knit) and C2Bp (cable 2 back purl). These cable maneuvers are created by slipping stitches onto a cable needle, leaving them at the front or back of the work, and then knitting or purling the next stitch before working the held stitches. This creates dimensional, twisted texture throughout the design.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stocking stitch (known as stockinette stitch in US terminology), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric base. Stocking stitch is formed by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing the characteristic V-pattern texture.
The pattern also features cable stitch variations worked over a specific stitch pattern repeat. These decorative cable elements add visual interest and texture to the jumper's surface while maintaining the intermediate skill level appropriate for knitters with basic cable experience.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: MillaMia Naturally Soft Super Chunky yarn in two coordinating colors. The yarn requirements are approximate and vary by size: 8-10 balls of 50g (1¾oz) in the main color (such as Denim 430) and 5-7 balls in the contrast color (such as Doe 429). Alternative colourway options are provided, including Winter Berry with Heirloom Butternut, and Sailor Blue with a coordinating shade.
Needles: The pattern requires both 10mm (US 15) and 15mm (US 17) knitting needles in straight needle format for the main construction. For larger sizes, circular needles in both 10mm (US 15) and 15mm (US 17) are recommended. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitch techniques throughout the pattern.
Tension/Gauge: The pattern specifies two gauge measurements using the 15mm (US 17) needles: 8 stitches and 11 rows to 10cm (4in) over stocking stitch, and 10 stitches and 10 rows to 10cm (4in) over the cable pattern. Achieving correct tension is critical for proper fit across all seven size options.
Finished Measurements and Sizing
The finished chest measurements range from 101cm (39¾in) in the smallest size to 161cm (63½in) in the largest size. Sleeve length is consistent at 46cm (18in) across all sizes, while length to shoulder varies from 50cm (19¾in) to 62cm (24½in) depending on the size selected. The pattern includes detailed finished measurements for each of the seven size options to ensure proper fit selection.
Skill Level and Crafting Notes
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Tala Jumper is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to work with cable stitches and seamed garment construction. The use of MillaMia Naturally Soft Super Chunky yarn is noted as particularly rewarding, as the substantial yarn weight allows the pattern to grow quickly, providing satisfying progress and visual results for the knitter.
