Product Description
Mini Huxley Vest in Rowan Alpaca Soft DK
What is Being Made
The Mini Huxley Vest is a sleeveless knitted garment designed for children, available in five sizes to fit ages 3-4 through 11-12 years. The vest features a fitted silhouette with shaping at the armholes and neckline, creating a tailored vest suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece. The garment is constructed with a back and front panel, each shaped independently to create a professional, well-fitted finish.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level project employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its structured shape. Armhole shaping is accomplished through strategic cast-offs and decreases worked over multiple rows to create a smooth, fitted curve. Neck shaping involves casting off stitches at the beginning of rows and working each side of the neckline separately to create a balanced, symmetrical neckline opening. The pattern uses stocking stitch as the primary fabric base, combined with a 48-row patterned repeat that is worked from a chart throughout the garment. Decreasing stitches evenly across rows is used to adjust stitch counts between sections, and the pattern incorporates working stitches from a holder to manage multiple sections during construction.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Mini Huxley Vest is primarily worked in stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The design features a charted patterned repeat of 48 rows that runs throughout both the back and front pieces, adding visual interest and texture to the garment. Shaping is achieved through knit stitches combined with strategic cast-offs at armholes and neckline, and single decreases worked at each end of rows to taper the armholes gradually. The pattern requires careful attention to pattern alignment across shaping rows, as the armhole decreases are not shown on the chart and must be worked while maintaining the pattern sequence.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Mini Huxley Vest is knitted using Rowan Alpaca Soft DK yarn, a lightweight double-knit weight yarn supplied in 50-gram balls. The pattern calls for 3 to 4 balls depending on the child's size, and is photographed in two colorways: Hunter Green 214 and Blue Haze 232. An optional contrast yarn, Rowan Summerlite DK in 50-gram balls, is also available and is shown photographed in Mushroom 454, allowing for creative colorwork variations.
The project requires three needle sizes to achieve proper fabric tension and construction:
- 3.25mm (US 3) needles in a standard pair, used for ribbed sections and initial cast-on
- 4mm (US 6) needles in a standard pair, used for the main body of the garment
- 3.25mm (US 3) circular needles, no more than 40 cm long, used for neckline finishing
Gauge and Sizing
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 centimeters measured over stocking stitch, and 23 stitches and 31 rows to 10 centimeters measured over the patterned sections, both using 4mm (US 6) needles. The vest is available in five sizes with actual chest measurements ranging from 63 to 86 centimeters (24¾ to 34¾ inches), accommodating children from ages 3-4 through 11-12 years.
