What is Being Made

The Mini Oxford Hat is a classic knitted beanie designed for children and available in adult sizing. This project creates a fitted, ribbed hat that works from the bottom up in the round, featuring a shaped crown that tapers to a neat finished top. The hat is available in four child sizes—to fit ages 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12 years—with head circumferences ranging from 42.5 cm to 49.5 cm (16¾ to 19½ inches), plus an adult pattern option.

Techniques Used

Circular knitting: The entire hat is worked in the round using the four-needle method, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric without requiring seaming. This technique is ideal for hat construction as it produces a continuous spiral of stitches.

Decreasing for shaping: The crown shaping employs K3tog tbl (knit three together through the back loop) decreases worked at strategic intervals. These decreases are placed between stitch markers to create evenly distributed shaping points that taper the hat crown symmetrically.

Three-needle bind-off: The hat is finished using a three-needle cast-off technique, which joins two sets of live stitches together while binding them off simultaneously. The beanie is folded so the wrong side faces outward during this final step, creating a neat, secure closure at the crown.

Yarn: Rowan Alpaca Soft DK, a double-knitting weight yarn. The yardage required is 2 balls (100 grams total) for sizes 3-6 and 6-9 years, and 3 balls (150 grams total) for the 9-12 year and adult sizes. The sample shown is photographed in five colorways: Blue Haze 232, Hunter Green 214, Rainy Day 210, Verdigris 233, and Blossom 223.

Needles: A set of four double-pointed needles in 3.25mm (US size 3). Double-pointed needles allow for working small circumferences in the round without gaps or laddering between needles.

Notions: Stitch markers are required to denote the beginning and end of rounds, as well as to mark the shaping points during crown decreases.

Tension and Fit

The pattern specifies a tension of 34 stitches and 34 rounds to 10 cm (approximately 4 inches) measured over the rib pattern when worked unstretched on 3.25mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for obtaining the proper head circumference and ensuring the hat fits appropriately across the four size options provided.
