What Is Being Made

The Infinite Elation Snood is a seamless, one-size cowl designed by Sandra Oakeshott. This versatile neckwear piece features a finished circumference of 96.5cm (38 inches) and a depth of 18cm (7 inches), making it suitable for wrapping comfortably around the neck. The cowl is classified as an Easy skill level project, making it accessible to knitters with basic experience.

Techniques Used

This cowl is constructed using seamless knitting worked in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous, tubular fabric. The design incorporates horizontal stripes created through strategic color changes and slip stitch techniques. Rather than cutting and rejoining yarns between color sections, the pattern instructs knitters to carry yarn not in use loosely up the back of the work, a technique that maintains tension and prevents puckering while creating clean striping effects.

Stitches Used

The cowl employs two primary stitch patterns:

• Seed Stitch: Used for the initial 4 rounds at the cast-on edge, this textured stitch is worked over an odd number of stitches and creates a bumpy, reversible fabric that adds visual interest and helps prevent rolling at the edges.
• Slip Stitch Pattern: The main pattern repeat consists of 12 rounds that alternate between slip stitch rows and knit rows across three colors (A, B, and C). The slip stitch rows alternate between slipping stitches purlwise with yarn held in front (wyif) and slipping stitches purlwise with yarn held in back (wyib), creating a subtle textured stripe effect while the knit rounds in between allow the colors to blend visually.

Materials and Tools

The Infinite Elation cowl is worked in Mirasol yarn, requiring three 50-gram skeins in complementary colors: colour #28 (A), colour #27 (B), and colour #26 (C). The project uses a 3.25mm (US size 3) circular needle measuring 60cm (24 inches) in length, or the size necessary to achieve the correct tension. Additional tools include a stitch marker to denote the beginning of each round and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Tension and Construction Details

The pattern is worked to a tension of 26 stitches and 56 rounds over 10cm (4 inches) when measured over the Slip Stitch pattern and blocked. The cowl begins with a cast-on of 251 stitches, which is decreased by 1 stitch after the initial Seed Stitch section, resulting in 250 stitches for the main pattern repeat. The cowl is worked continuously until it reaches approximately 18cm (7 inches) in depth, finishing on a round 4 of the slip stitch pattern to ensure a balanced color transition at the completion.
