Product Description
Mirasol Tunic
What Is Being Made
The Mirasol Tunic is a reversible knitted garment designed by Michele Meadows. This intermediate-level project features a unique construction with side openings and positive ease, making it a versatile piece suitable for various body types and styling preferences. The tunic is worked in a bottom-up construction method with seamed finishing, creating a polished, structured garment.
Construction and Techniques
This tunic employs a distinctive bottom-up, seamed construction worked flat on straight needles. The garment is divided into two main sections: the back and front panels (worked alike), and the sleeves and yoke (worked side to side). This mixed construction approach allows for efficient shaping and creates the signature side openings that measure approximately 7.5–10cm (3–4 inches). The reversible nature of the design means both sides of the fabric are visually interesting and wearable.
The back and front panels are cast on and worked upward with strategic increases to create the side openings. The sleeves and yoke section is worked horizontally from side to side, with increases and decreases marking the armhole placements. Two sides of the yoke are worked simultaneously using separate balls of yarn, allowing for proper neck shaping before joining back together. Seaming completes the construction, joining the side seams of the back and front panels.
Stitches Used
The Mirasol Tunic features two primary stitch patterns that create visual interest and texture:
- Pattern A (multiple of 4 stitches): An alternating pattern combining knit and purl stitches. Row 1 (right side) is worked entirely in knit, while Row 2 (wrong side) uses a [p2, k2] repeat ending with p2. This creates a subtle ribbed texture that is reversible.
- Pattern B (multiple of 4 stitches plus 2): A more complex pattern incorporating twisted stitches. Row 1 (right side) features [p2, Tw2R] (purl 2, twisted right 2) repeated six times, followed by [p2, Tw2L] (purl 2, twisted left 2) repeated six times, ending with p2. This creates a dynamic, textured surface with directional twisted elements.
- Stockinette Stitch: Used for tension measurement and foundational sections, providing a smooth, classic knitted fabric base.
Materials and Specifications
The Mirasol Tunic is constructed using Mirasol yarn in colour #1506. Yardage requirements vary by size: Small requires 10 skeins, Medium requires 12 skeins, Large requires 14 skeins, and X-Large requires 16 skeins, with each skein weighing 100 grams. Knitting is worked on a pair of size 10mm (US 15) needles, or the size needed to obtain proper tension. A yarn needle is required for finishing and seaming.
The tension for this project is 9 stitches and 14 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in Stockinette stitch, which is important to achieve the correct finished measurements and garment fit.
Finished Measurements
The tunic is available in four sizes with the following finished measurements:
- Small: Width 101.5cm (40in), Length 63.5cm (25in), Sleeve length 38cm (15in)
- Medium: Width 112cm (44in), Length 66cm (26in), Sleeve length 41cm (16in)
- Large: Width 122cm (48in), Length 66cm (26in), Sleeve length 43cm (17in)
- X-Large: Width 132cm (52in), Length 68.5cm (27in), Sleeve length 45.5cm (18in)
The tunic features positive ease, meaning the finished measurements are intentionally larger than typical body measurements to create a comfortable, relaxed fit. The side openings add to the garment's versatility and contemporary aesthetic.
