Noro Plaid Ruana

What is Being Made

The Noro Plaid Ruana is a beginner-friendly knitted cape and poncho design featuring a plaid pattern. This finished garment measures approximately 42 inches (106.5 cm) in width and 29 inches (73.5 cm) in length, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and body types.

Craft and Techniques

This project is created using the knitting craft. The design incorporates several fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible to beginners while still producing a visually interesting finished piece. The construction involves working with stitch markers to track pattern placement, and the pattern includes techniques such as yarn overs to create new stitches, slip stitches for decreasing, and pick-up-and-knit methods for adding stitches along edges. The plaid effect is achieved through charted colorwork, where "no stitch" spaces in the chart indicate areas where stitches have been decreased or not yet made, requiring the knitter to skip over these shaded spaces while working the remaining stitches.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch used throughout the project, worked at a gauge of 14 stitches and 22 rows to 4 inches (10 cm)
  • Purl Stitch – Used for texture and pattern variation within the design
  • Yarn Over – Creates new stitches and contributes to the plaid pattern structure
  • Slip, Slip, Knit/Purl – A decrease technique where two stitches are slipped and then knitted or purled together to reduce stitch count
  • Slip Stitch – Used to pass stitches from one needle to another without working them, facilitating decreases and edge finishing
  • Selvage Stitch – Edge stitches that simplify seaming and create clean borders
  • Pick Up and Knit/Purl – Allows the knitter to add stitches by knitting or purling into loops along an edge

Materials

The Noro Plaid Ruana is constructed using Noro Tennen yarn, a natural fiber option from the Noro brand. The pattern calls for 6 hanks of 100 grams each in color #45 (Main Color) and 2 hanks of 100 grams each in color #02 (Contrasting Color), providing the two-color plaid effect. The project requires one US 8/5mm circular needle measuring 24 inches (60 cm) long, sized to obtain proper gauge. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a US H-8/5mm crochet hook for finishing details. The pattern editor recommends using LYKKE® needles and hooks for optimal results.
