Noro Chevron Wrap

What is Being Made

The Noro Chevron Wrap is a beginner-friendly knitted cape or poncho-style garment constructed from two rectangular panels that are sewn together along one long side, with an opening left for the neck. This design creates a versatile layering piece with finished measurements of approximately 22½ inches wide by 32 inches long.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs fundamental techniques suitable for beginners. The wrap is worked flat in two separate rectangular pieces using straight needles, then assembled through seaming. The primary construction method involves working even (continuing in pattern without increasing or decreasing) across multiple rows to achieve the desired length. The pattern incorporates basic shaping techniques including yarn overs and decreases to create the chevron stitch pattern, which forms the visual interest of the finished garment.

Stitches Used

The Noro Chevron Wrap features a chevron pattern as its primary stitch structure. This pattern is created through the strategic use of:

  • Knit stitches (k) – the foundation stitch worked on right-side rows
  • Purl stitches (p) – worked on wrong-side rows to create texture
  • Yarn overs (yo) – creating decorative openings and increasing stitches within the pattern repeat
  • Decreases including k2tog (knit two together) and SKP (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) – used to shape the characteristic peaks and valleys of the chevron
  • S2KP (slip 2 stitches together knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over) – a centered double decrease that forms the valley points of the chevron
  • Garter stitch edge – a 4-stitch border worked in knit stitches on every row to frame the pattern and provide stability

The chevron pattern is worked by repeating rows 1 and 2 throughout the piece. Row 1 (right side) establishes the pattern with yarn overs and decreases, while Row 2 (wrong side) is worked in garter stitch at the edges with purl stitches across the middle, allowing the chevron motif to develop.

Materials and Gauge

The Noro Chevron Wrap is created using 2 balls of Noro Ito yarn, each weighing 200 grams, in colorway #12. The project requires one pair of US 8/5mm needles and one pair of US 9/5.5mm needles, with the larger needles used as the primary working needles to obtain proper gauge. The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches and 17 rows to 4 inches over the chevron pattern using size US 9/5.5mm needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished wrap meets the intended finished measurements. The pattern editor recommends using LYKKE® brand needles and hooks for optimal results.

Construction Details

Each rectangle panel begins with casting on 86 stitches using the larger needles. The piece is worked by knitting 4 foundation rows, then continuing with the chevron pattern repeat until the piece measures approximately 32 inches from the cast-on edge, ending on a wrong-side row before binding off. This process is repeated to create a second identical panel. The two completed rectangles are then sewn together along one long side, with a neck opening left unsewn to allow the wrap to be worn as a cape or poncho.
