What Is Being Made

The Noro Textured Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed as a pullover garment. This project creates a finished piece with a textured pattern throughout, sized for Small (bust 39in/99cm), Medium/Large (bust 49in/124.5cm), or X-Large/XX-Large (bust 58½in/148.5cm). The back length measures 24¾ (25¼, 27)in/63 (64, 68.5)cm depending on size, and the upper arm circumference is 12 (13, 14½)in/30.5 (33, 37)cm.

Construction Techniques

This pullover is worked flat on a circular needle without joining in the round, meaning the knitter works back and forth in rows rather than in continuous spirals. The garment is constructed using a bottom-up method, where pieces are knitted beginning at the lower edges and progressing upward toward the shoulders. The finished pieces are then seamed together to create the complete garment.

A distinctive feature of this design involves working with two separate balls of yarn on each major piece. The front and back panels are each worked with one ball of yarn for the first half of the piece and a second ball of yarn for the second half, with the color change occurring at the center of each piece as indicated by a blue line on the accompanying chart. The two yarns are twisted together at each row's midpoint to prevent holes from forming in the fabric. Similarly, half of the textured chart pattern is worked on each sleeve.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Noro Textured Pullover employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques to create its textured appearance:

• Slip, Slip, Knit/Purl (SSK/SSP): Two stitches are slipped knitwise (or purlwise) one at a time to the right-hand needle, then the left-hand needle is inserted into the fronts of these stitches from left to right and they are knitted or purled together, resulting in a one-stitch decrease.
• Slip Stitch: A stitch is passed from the left-hand needle to the right-hand needle as if to purl without working it, creating a smooth edge or transition in the fabric.
• Yarn Over: A new stitch is created by placing the yarn over the right-hand needle, which adds an eyelet or decorative hole to the fabric and increases the stitch count.
• Skip/Work Even: The pattern includes instructions to skip specified numbers of stitches from the previous row and work into the next stitch, and to continue in the specified pattern without increasing or decreasing stitches.

These stitches are combined according to a chart pattern to create the textured design that defines this pullover.

Materials and Tools

The Noro Textured Pullover is knitted using Noro Kiri yarn in colorway #06. The yardage required is 3 (4, 5) x 100g hanks, with the quantity depending on the size being made. The project is worked on one size US 8/5mm circular needle measuring 32in/80cm long, which accommodates the large number of stitches required for the garment width while allowing flat working.

Additional materials include stitch markers to denote pattern repeats and important shaping points, and stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during construction. The pattern editor recommends using LYKKE® needles and hooks for best results.

Gauge

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows to 4in/10cm over the chart pattern using size US 8/5mm needles.
