Noro Gradient Cable Pullover

Project Overview

The Noro Gradient Cable Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed to showcase the beautiful color gradients of Noro Tennen yarn. This pullover features a classic cable pattern combined with horizontal stripes created by alternating yarn colors, making it an elegant choice for knitters looking to work with luxury yarn while developing their cable and seaming skills.

What Is Being Made

This is a pullover sweater available in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large. The finished measurements are as follows:

  • Bust: 39 (44, 49, 54) inches / 99 (112, 124.5, 137) centimeters
  • Length: 26 (26½, 27, 27½) inches / 66 (67.5, 68.5, 70) centimeters
  • Upper arm: 13 (13½, 14, 15) inches / 33 (34.5, 35.5, 38) centimeters

The sweater is designed as a fitted, wearable garment with a focus on stitch definition and color work.

Construction Techniques

The Noro Gradient Cable Pullover employs several key construction methods:

  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing you to try on the garment as you progress and easily adjust length if needed.
  • Worked flat: All pieces are worked on straight needles in flat rows rather than in the round, which means you will have seams to join the pieces together.
  • Seamed assembly: Individual pieces (front, back, and sleeves) are knitted separately and then seamed together using mattress stitch or similar techniques, creating clean, professional-looking side and sleeve seams.
  • Striped colorwork: The design incorporates horizontal stripes by alternating between four coordinating colors of Noro Tennen yarn, creating a gradient effect throughout the sweater.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

This pattern utilizes a range of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Cable stitches: The primary decorative element, cables add texture and visual interest. These are created by crossing groups of stitches over one another to form twisted rope-like patterns.
  • Knit and purl stitches: The foundation of the sweater, creating stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) as the base fabric.
  • Increases: Multiple increase methods are used to shape the sweater, including knit in front and back of stitch (kfb) and make one (M1) techniques, which add stitches without creating visible holes.
  • Decreases: Shaping is achieved through knit 2 together (k2tog) and purl 2 together (p2tog) decreases, which reduce stitch count while maintaining fabric integrity.
  • Selvage stitches: Edge stitches are maintained throughout to facilitate easier seaming of the finished pieces.
  • Slip, slip, knit/purl (ssk/ssp): These decreases are used for left-leaning decreases that pair aesthetically with right-leaning k2tog decreases.
  • Stitch markers: Used to denote pattern repeats and shaping points, helping you track your progress through the cable and color pattern.
  • Pick up and knit/purl: This technique is used to add stitches along finished edges, typically for neckbands and finishing.

Materials

The Noro Gradient Cable Pullover calls for high-quality materials that contribute to its finished appearance:

  • Yarn: Noro Tennen in four coordinating colors—#03 (A), #02 (B), #01 (C), and #28 (D). Quantities vary by size: 2 (2, 3, 3) x 100g hanks of color A; 2 (2, 2, 3) x 100g hanks each of colors B, C, and D. The Noro Tennen yarn is known for its beautiful color gradations and blend of natural fibers.
  • Needles: One pair of size US
