Noro Poncho

What is Being Made

The Noro Poncho is an intermediate-level knitted cape-style garment designed in one size that fits all. This versatile piece measures 40 inches wide by 28 inches long, making it suitable for layering over various outfits. The poncho construction provides comfortable, relaxed coverage without fitted sleeves, offering both style and practicality for a range of body types.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques to create its finished design:

  • Bottom-up construction: The poncho is worked from the bottom edge upward, allowing for easier fitting adjustments and a natural progression through the pattern.
  • Worked flat: The main body is knitted flat on circular needles rather than in continuous rounds, which simplifies stitch management and shaping.
  • Lace work: Decorative lace elements are incorporated throughout the design, created using yarn overs and decreases to form openwork patterns that add visual interest and drape.
  • Stripes: The poncho features striped colorwork, taking advantage of the variegated nature of the yarn used.
  • Seaming: Pieces are sewn together using selvage stitches along the edges, which are specifically designed to make seaming easier and create clean, professional-looking joins.
  • Worked in the round: A cowl neck option is available that uses circular needle techniques for seamless construction at the neckline.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches as the foundation. Yarn overs are used extensively to create the lace pattern details, while slip, slip, knit decreases and other decrease techniques shape the garment. Selvage stitches are worked along edges to facilitate seaming. The pattern uses stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping points, and includes charted sections where no stitch spaces indicate areas where stitches have been decreased or not yet made, requiring the knitter to skip over these shaded spaces while working the active stitches.

Materials

The Noro Poncho is constructed using 5 balls of Noro Ito yarn in colorway #08, with each ball weighing 200 grams. The pattern calls for one US 9/5.5mm circular needle measuring 24 inches long for the main body, and one US 10/6mm circular needle of the same length specifically for the optional cowl neck construction. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping. The pattern recommends using LYKKE® needles and hooks for best results.
