Noro Poncho Shawl
What is Being Made
The Noro Poncho Shawl is a versatile layering piece that functions as both a poncho and a shawl. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a rectangular wrap measuring 24 inches wide by 64 inches long, with integrated openings designed for armholes. The finished garment offers the flexibility to wear as a traditional poncho with arm openings or as a generous shawl for wrapping around the shoulders and body.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs seamless construction, meaning the piece is created as one continuous fabric without requiring seaming at the end. The garment is worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, allowing the knitter to work back and forth in rows. The design features horizontal stripes created through the color variations naturally present in the yarn, adding visual interest without complex color-work techniques.
The pattern utilizes standard knitting techniques including yarn overs for stitch creation, slip stitches for edge definition, and various decreasing methods such as slip, slip, knit to shape the fabric. Stitch markers are used throughout to help track pattern repeats and armhole placements, while stitch holders maintain stitches during construction.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) — the primary stitch forming the base fabric
- Yarn overs — used to create new stitches and add texture
- Slip stitches — employed for selvage edges that facilitate seaming and create clean finishing
- Slip, slip, knit decreases — used to shape the garment and manage stitch counts
- Knit and purl stitches — fundamental stitches worked in various combinations according to the stitch chart
Materials and Tools
This project requires 4 skeins of Noro Silk Garden Sock yarn in colorway #484, with each skein weighing 100 grams. The yarn's inherent color variations create the striped effect without additional color changes.
Two sizes of US circular needles measuring 24 inches in length are needed: US 6/4mm needles for the initial cast-on and ribbing sections, and US 7/4.5mm needles for the main fabric worked in stockinette stitch. The larger needle size accommodates the gauge requirement of 20 stitches and 26 rows per 4 inches. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and armhole positions, and stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches during construction. The pattern editor recommends using LYKKE® brand needles and hooks for optimal results.
