Noro Boxy Cardigan

What Is Being Made

The Noro Boxy Cardigan is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan featuring a relaxed, boxy silhouette. This garment is available in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large, with finished bust measurements ranging from 41 inches (104 cm) to 53 inches (134.5 cm) and lengths from 22 inches (56 cm) to 24 inches (61 cm). The cardigan is designed to be worn closed and includes five ¾-inch buttons for fastening.

Techniques Used

This cardigan is constructed using bottom-up construction, meaning the body and sleeves are knitted from the lower edge upward. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for easy shaping and modification. The finished pieces are seamed together to create the final garment structure. Lace techniques are incorporated into the design, adding visual interest and texture to the finished cardigan.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Make one (M1): An invisible increase worked by inserting the left-hand needle from front to back under the strand between stitches and knitting into the back loop to add one stitch
  • Make one purl (M1P): A purl-based increase created by lifting the strand between stitches and purling it to add one stitch
  • Slip, slip, knit (SSK): A left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches knitwise individually, then inserting the left-hand needle through their fronts and knitting them together
  • Slip stitch: A stitch passed from the left-hand needle to the right-hand needle without being worked, used for edge finishing
  • Selvage stitch: An edge stitch that facilitates easier seaming of the finished pieces
  • Yarn over: A decorative increase that creates an eyelet or lace opening
  • Work even: Continuing in the established pattern without increasing or decreasing
  • Pick up and knit/purl: Techniques for adding stitches along an edge, commonly used for button bands and necklines

The pattern includes charted sections with no stitch indicators shown as shaded spaces where stitches have been decreased or not yet made, requiring the knitter to skip over these spaces while working the chart.

Materials

The Noro Boxy Cardigan is knitted with Noro Tsubame yarn in colorway #02. Yardage requirements are 2 balls for Small and Medium sizes, and 3 balls for Large and X-Large sizes, with each ball weighing 200 grams. The project requires two pairs of needles: US 4/3.5mm needles for ribbing or edging and US 6/4mm needles for the main fabric. Additional notions include five ¾-inch (19mm) buttons for the cardigan front closure and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.
