Product Description

Noro A-Line Pullover is a gorgeous women’s A-line sweater featuring three-quarter sleeves, set-in sleeves, and a shirttail hem that has Okunshima do all the work. You’ll want this in several colorways. The striped pattern is creating by working from two different cakes of the same colorway by starting the center of one skein and the outside of another. This sweater is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. Noro Okunoshima is a lofty blend of silk, wool, angora, and mohair that mimics the look of handspun yarn. This single-ply yarn has cozy warmth and the gorgeous self-striping colors that we've come to expect from Noro.

Noro 1704 A-Line Pullover

What is Being Made

The Noro 1704 A-Line Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed with a flattering A-line silhouette that increases in width from the bust downward. This pullover is sized for Small through 3X-Large, with finished bust measurements ranging from 39 inches (99cm) to 59 inches (149.5cm) and back lengths from 23¾ inches (60.5cm) to 26¼ inches (66.5cm). The garment features upper arm circumferences between 13½ inches (34.5cm) and 18½ inches (47cm), making it a versatile everyday sweater suitable for various body types and layering preferences.

Construction Techniques

This pullover is constructed using a bottom-up method, meaning the knitter begins at the lower edge and works upward toward the neckline. The garment is worked flat on straight needles or circular needles used in a flat construction method, rather than being worked in the round. The pieces are then seamed together to create the finished garment, which allows for precise shaping and professional finishing along the side seams and sleeve seams.

The A-line shaping is achieved through strategic increases worked throughout the body sections. These increases are accomplished using multiple techniques: knit in front and back of stitch (adding stitches within a single stitch), make one increases (lifting the strand between stitches and knitting into the back loop), and make one purl stitch increases (lifting strands and purling them for increases on purl rows). These increase methods create nearly invisible shaping that maintains the integrity of the stitch pattern.

Stitch Techniques and Pattern Details

The pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques essential to the construction. Selvage stitches are used as edge stitches to facilitate easier seaming of the finished pieces. The pattern utilizes slip, slip, knit and slip, slip, purl decreases to shape the armholes and neckline, which are worked by slipping two stitches individually knitwise or purlwise, then inserting the left needle through both stitches and knitting or purling them together.

Additional stitch techniques include knitwise and purlwise insertions for proper stitch orientation, slip stitch techniques for edge finishing, and pick up and knit/purl methods for adding stitches along finished edges—particularly useful for neckline and armhole finishing. The pattern incorporates place markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping points. Chart notation includes no stitch indicators (shown as shaded spaces) where stitches have been decreased or not yet made, requiring the knitter to skip over these spaces while working the active stitches.

Materials Required

The Noro 1704 A-Line Pullover is designed to be knitted with Noro Okunoshima yarn in colorway #04. Yardage requirements vary by size: Small and Medium sizes require 4 cakes of 100g each, Large and X-Large require 5 cakes, and 2X-Large and 3X-Large require 6 cakes. The pattern calls for one size US 9/5.5mm circular needle measuring 32 inches (80cm) long, or the appropriate needle size needed to obtain the specified gauge for accurate fit.

The choice of Noro Okunoshima yarn, known for its beautiful striped color variations, means the A-line pullover will naturally feature stripes throughout the fabric as the yarn's color repeats are worked. This creates visual interest without requiring the knitter to manage multiple yarn colors or complex colorwork techniques, making it accessible for intermediate-level knitters while still producing a sophisticated, professionally finished garment.
