Noro Ocean Sunset Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Noro Ocean Sunset Cardigan is a complex knitted cardigan available in three size ranges: Small/Medium, Large/X-Large, and 2X-Large/3X-Large. The finished garment features a bust measurement of 46½ (51, 55½) inches / 118 (129.5, 141) centimeters, with a length of 33½ (34, 34) inches / 85 (86.5, 86.5) centimeters excluding trim. This is a substantial, wearable piece designed for comfortable everyday wear.

Construction Techniques

The Ocean Sunset Cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed, and worked-flat approach. The body is worked in one piece to the underarms on circular needles, after which the back and front panels are worked separately to the shoulders. This construction method allows for precise shaping and fit adjustments at key points of the garment. The use of short-row shaping with wrap and turn techniques provides tailored shaping for a professional finish. The cardigan incorporates a ribbed pattern throughout, which adds elasticity and structure to the finished piece.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques and stitches:

  • Slip, slip, knit/purl (ssk/ssp): Slip the next two stitches knitwise (or purlwise for purl versions), one at a time, to the right-hand needle, then insert the left-hand needle into the fronts of these stitches from left to right and knit or purl them together to decrease one stitch.
  • Slip stitch: Pass a stitch from the left-hand needle to the right-hand needle as if to purl without working it, used for edge definition and pattern continuity.
  • Yarn over: Create a new stitch by placing the yarn over the right-hand needle to add stitches and create textural elements within the design.
  • Work even: Continue in the specified pattern without increasing or decreasing, maintaining consistent stitch counts across rows.
  • Short row wrap and turn (w&t): A shaping technique executed on right-side and wrong-side rows that involves slipping stitches, moving yarn position, and wrapping stitches to create smooth curves and contours. When working the wrapped stitch later, the right-hand needle is inserted under the wrap and worked together with the corresponding stitch on the needle.
  • 3-needle bind-off: A joining technique used to seamlessly bind off and join two sets of live stitches together.
  • Rib pattern: The cardigan features ribbed knitting throughout, which provides structure and elasticity to the garment.

Materials

The Noro Ocean Sunset Cardigan requires 3 (4, 4) x 200g kegs of Noro Tsubame in colorway #09, a premium yarn choice that contributes to the garment's quality and finished appearance. The pattern calls for multiple needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction: three size US 7/4.5mm circular needles measuring 24 inches/60 centimeters or longer (or size to obtain gauge), one size US 5/3.75mm circular needle measuring 40 inches/100 centimeters long, and one set of four size US 5/3.75mm double-pointed needles. Additional notions include a cable needle, stitch markers, and stitch holders for managing stitches throughout the construction process.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 25 rows to 4 inches / 10 centimeters over rib pattern using size US 7/4.5mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit and finished measurements, and knitters are advised to take time to check gauge before beginning the project.
