Product Description

Noro Hazelnut is a lovely oversized quick-knit women’s cardigan with dropped shoulders, v-neck, and pockets knit in Tsuido. The sweater is knit flat in one piece from the bottom up to the underarms and then divided for the fronts and the back. Sleeves are worked separately and then seamed. The front bands are knit separately and then sewn to the sweater. Tsuido means tweed in Japanese, and this bulky weight yarn from Noro certainly lives up to its name! With a slightly thick and thin structure and colorful bits of unspun roving added to its single ply, Tsuido will bring the texture to any project you knit!

Noro Hazelnut Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Noro Hazelnut Cardigan is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed in a range of sizes from Small through 5X. The finished cardigan features a closed bust measurement ranging from 40 inches (101.5cm) in the smallest size to 68½ inches (174cm) in the largest size, with a length between 28½ and 31½ inches (72.5–80cm) depending on size. The upper arm circumference ranges from 17 to 23 inches (43–58cm). This versatile layering piece is shown in size Small and offers multiple sizing options to accommodate different body types.

Construction Techniques

The Hazelnut Cardigan is constructed using several key knitting techniques that build a well-finished garment:

  • Bottom-up construction: The cardigan is knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing for easy length adjustments during the knitting process.
  • Worked flat: Sections of the cardigan are worked flat on straight needles or circular needles used back-and-forth, rather than in continuous rounds, which is typical for cardigan body and sleeve pieces.
  • Worked in the round: Certain sections utilize circular needle techniques worked in continuous rounds for seamless construction.
  • Seamed construction: Pieces are sewn together using seaming techniques, with selvage stitches incorporated along edges to facilitate neat, professional seaming.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques essential for creating a well-proportioned cardigan:

  • Knit and purl stitches: The foundation stitches that create the fabric texture and structure.
  • Increases: Created using methods such as knitting in the front and back of a stitch, and make one increases (both knitwise and purlwise variations) to add stitches for shaping.
  • Decreases: Accomplished through knit two together and purl two together reductions to shape the garment.
  • Slip stitches: Used in slip, slip, knit (and slip, slip, purl) decreases for refined stitch definition.
  • Pick up and knit/purl: Techniques for picking up stitches along finished edges, essential for adding bands, collars, or other trim elements.
  • Selvage stitches: Edge stitches incorporated throughout to create clean, seam-friendly edges.
  • Stitch markers: Used to denote pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the knitting process.

Materials and Tools

The Noro Hazelnut Cardigan is knitted using quality materials specified for different sizes:

  • Yarn: Noro Tsuido in colorway #24, with yardage requirements ranging from 4 balls (200g each) for smaller sizes to 7 balls for the largest 5X size, providing approximately 800–1400 grams of yarn depending on size selection.
  • Needles: One size US 10/6mm circular needle measuring 32 inches (80cm) long, used for working both flat and in the round as the pattern requires.

This intermediate-level project combines classic cardigan construction methods with the beautiful variegated colorways characteristic of Noro yarns, creating a sophisticated and wearable garment suitable for various occasions and seasons.
