Noro Block Party Shawl

What is Being Made

The Noro Block Party Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl constructed from geometric blocks. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring approximately 10½ inches wide by 80 inches long, making it a versatile accessory suitable for draping and layering.

Construction Techniques

The Block Party Shawl employs a bottom-up, worked-flat construction method with seaming. The pattern uses a distinctive modular building approach where large squares are worked first in sets of two, with small square edging incorporated at one end. After the initial squares are completed, they are joined together. Long side strips are then worked last to complete the shawl structure. This block-based construction method allows for interesting geometric patterning and is worked on straight needles rather than in the round.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The primary stitch used throughout this pattern is garter stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric. The pattern incorporates several essential knitting techniques to achieve the finished design:

  • Slip stitches – used to create selvage edges that facilitate easier seaming between blocks
  • Yarn overs – used to create new stitches and add decorative texture
  • Slip, slip, knit/purl decreases – used to shape the blocks and manage stitch counts
  • Skip stitches – used to create pattern variation within the block sections
  • Knit into front and back (kfb) – used for increases within the pattern

The pattern includes a Double Block Pattern section that defines the primary stitch motif used throughout the shawl construction.

Materials and Gauge

This pattern calls for 2 x 200g balls of Noro Ito yarn in colorway #29. The yarn is worked on US 7/4.5mm needles, with both straight needles and a 40-inch circular needle required for different sections of the construction. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 36 rows to 4 inches over garter stitch using size US 7/4.5mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
