Noro Asters Cowl
What is Being Made
The Noro Asters Cowl is a seamless, tubular neck accessory designed to be worn as a comfortable, close-fitting cowl. With finished measurements of 32 inches in circumference and 17 inches in height, this cowl provides substantial coverage for the neck and shoulders. The design is classified as an easy-level project, making it accessible to knitters with basic to intermediate skills.
Construction Techniques
This cowl is constructed using a bottom-up, seamless approach worked in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric. The seamless construction method ensures a professional finish and allows for even tension throughout the garment. The cowl is worked on a circular needle, which accommodates the tubular shaping required for this neckwear style.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used
The Noro Asters Cowl features brioche rib as its primary stitch pattern. The brioche technique creates a luxuriously textured, reversible fabric with excellent stretch and recovery. Key stitches employed include:
- Brk (brioche knit): Created by knitting together the slipped stitch from the previous round with its accompanying yarn over, this stitch forms the foundation of the brioche pattern.
- Brp (brioche purl): Purling together the slipped stitch from the previous round with its yarn over, this complements the brioche knit to create the characteristic brioche rib texture.
- Sl1yo (slip one, yarn over): A foundational brioche technique where yarn is brought to the front, one stitch is slipped purlwise, and yarn is moved to the back, creating a slipped stitch and yarn over that count as one stitch. All stitches are slipped purlwise throughout the pattern.
- Slip stitch: Stitches are passed from the left-hand needle to the right-hand needle as if to purl without working them, maintaining the brioche structure.
- Yarn over: New stitches are created by placing yarn over the right-hand needle, adding texture and dimension to the brioche rib pattern.
Materials and Gauge
The Noro Asters Cowl is designed to be worked with 5 skeins of Noro Kureyon yarn in colorway #359, each skein weighing 50 grams. The pattern calls for one US 10/6mm circular needle measuring 24 inches in length, along with a stitch marker for tracking rounds. A stitch marker is also required to denote the beginning of each round.
The recommended gauge is 13 stitches and 42 rounds to 4 inches over brioche rib using US 10/6mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the cowl fits comfortably around the neck. Knitters are advised to take time to check gauge before beginning the project.
