Noro Sia Sweater
What Is Being Made
The Noro Sia Sweater is a knitted pullover garment available in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and 1X. This easy-level sweater features finished bust measurements of 45 (47, 50, 53) inches and a length of 22½ (23, 23½, 24) inches, making it a versatile everyday knit suitable for various body types. The upper arm width measures 15 (16, 17, 18) inches, providing a comfortable, wearable fit.
Construction Techniques
The Sia Sweater is constructed using a bottom-up approach, meaning the knitter begins at the lower edge and works upward toward the neckline. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and pieces are seamed together upon completion. This traditional construction method allows for straightforward pattern-following and is particularly beginner-friendly, as indicated by the easy difficulty rating.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Sia Sweater employs a charted pattern as its primary design element. Knitters will encounter several fundamental stitch techniques throughout the project:
- Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric structure
- Yarn overs create decorative openings and are used to add new stitches
- Slip, slip, knit (SSK) decreases reduce stitch count while maintaining pattern integrity
- Slip stitches are used at selvage edges to create clean, seam-friendly finishing edges
- Pick up and knit techniques allow the knitter to add stitches along finished edges, useful for neckline or band construction
- No stitch spaces appear on charts where stitches have been decreased or not yet made; knitters skip these shaded areas and work only the active stitches
Materials and Tools
The Sia Sweater requires 5 (6, 6, 7) hanks of Noro Madara yarn in colorway #01, with each hank weighing 100 grams. This yarn quantity is distributed across the garment pieces during construction.
Needles required include one pair of size US 6/4mm needles for the ribbed cast-on and initial rows, and one pair of size US 7/4.5mm needles (or the size needed to obtain proper gauge) for the main body pattern work. Additional tools include clip-on stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and stitch holders for securing stitches when pieces are set aside during construction.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches and 24 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) measured over the charted pattern using size US 7/4.5mm needles. Achieving this gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, and knitters are advised to knit and measure a gauge swatch before beginning the project.
