Noro Wynnie Crochet Cape
Project Overview
Noro Wynnie is an intermediate-level crochet cape designed in one size that fits most. This garment features a sophisticated construction combining lace motifs with seamed assembly, creating an elegant layering piece. The finished cape measures 43¼ inches (110 centimeters) from arm edge to arm edge, including edging, with a length of 18½ inches (47 centimeters) from shoulder to bottom edge.
Construction Techniques
The Wynnie cape is constructed using multiple crochet techniques to achieve its refined appearance. The garment is worked flat in individual motifs that are subsequently seamed together, allowing for precise shaping and a professional finish. The design also incorporates worked in the round construction for the individual motifs, which are then assembled into the larger cape structure. The lace technique is prominently featured throughout, creating openwork sections that provide visual interest and breathability to the finished piece.
Stitch Details
The pattern utilizes a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to build the lace motifs and overall structure. Key stitches include:
- Chain stitches (ch) form the foundation and create the openwork characteristic of lace patterns
- Double crochet (dc) stitches provide structure and are used in clusters for dimensional effects
- Single crochet (sc) stitches create definition and are used in joining rounds
- Slip stitches (sl st) join rounds and connect motifs seamlessly
- Cluster stitches, specifically 2-dc and 3-dc clusters, add texture and visual depth to the lace pattern
- Back post stitches (BPdc, BPsc, BPtr) are referenced in the abbreviation guide, indicating textured stitch variations used throughout the design
Motif Pattern Structure
The cape is constructed from individual square motifs measuring 3¼ by 3¼ inches (8 by 8 centimeters) each. Each motif begins with an adjustable ring, a technique that allows for a closed center without a visible hole. The motif pattern develops over multiple rounds:
- Round 1 establishes the foundation with 12 double crochet stitches separated by chain-1 spaces, creating the base structure
- Round 2 introduces cluster stitches with 3-dc clusters separated by chain-3 spaces, building dimensional texture
- Rounds 3 and 4 expand the motif with longer chain spaces (chain-5 arcs) and single crochet connections, creating the characteristic lace openwork
This motif pattern is repeated to create the necessary number of squares for the cape's dimensions, then seamed together to form the complete garment.
Edging Details
A finished edging measuring ½ inch (1 centimeter) is worked around the perimeter of the assembled cape, providing a polished border. The edging is worked using the smaller crochet hook, which creates a tighter, more refined finish that frames the lace motifs.
Materials and Tools
The Noro Wynnie cape is crafted using premium yarn and appropriate crochet hooks for optimal results:
- Yarn: 4 balls of Noro Yukata in colorway #13 (200 grams per ball, totaling 800 grams)
- Crochet Hooks: US G-6/4mm hook for the edging and US H-8/5mm hook for the motifs and main construction
- Additional Tools: A tassel maker or 5-inch (12.5-centimeter) cardboard for creating finishing tassels
Gauge Information
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this intermediate project. The pattern specifies that one completed motif should measure 3¼ by 3¼ inches (8 by 8 centimeters) when worked with the US H-8/5mm hook. The edging should measure ½ inch (1 centimeter) when worked with the US G-6/4mm hook. Crocheters are strongly advised to take time to check gauges before beginning the project to ensure the finished cape achieves the intended dimensions.
