Noro Elegant Boutique Knitted Sweater

What is Being Made

The Noro Elegant is a sophisticated knitted sweater designed by Jenny Watson, featured in the Boutique collection. This garment is a classic pullover sweater available in five sizes ranging from X Small (to fit bust 81/86cm) through to X Large (to fit bust 122/127cm). The sweater offers a refined silhouette with a full length ranging from 56cm to 64cm depending on size, and sleeve length of approximately 46–48cm.

Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using the bottom-up method, meaning pieces are knitted from the lower edge upward. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and pieces are subsequently seamed together to create the finished sweater. The design incorporates prominent cable work as a central design feature, with cables running vertically down the front of the garment.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The Noro Elegant features a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches:

  • Ribbing: The sweater begins with 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2 alternating) worked over 11 rows using smaller needles to create a fitted edge
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Used as the main background fabric, providing a smooth, refined texture
  • Cable Stitches: Multiple cable techniques create the sweater's signature design:
    • C2B (Cable 2 Back): Slip one stitch to cable needle, hold at back, knit one, then knit one from cable needle
    • C2F (Cable 2 Front): Slip one stitch to cable needle, hold at front, knit one, then knit one from cable needle
    • C6B (Cable 6 Back): Slip three stitches to cable needle, hold at back, knit three, then knit three from cable needle
    • C6F (Cable 6 Front): Slip three stitches to cable needle, hold at front, knit three, then knit three from cable needle
  • Cable Panel: A central cable panel measuring 79 stitches spans 33cm (13 inches) across, featuring intricate cable crossings worked in a repeating 16-row pattern
  • Increases: Make one (m1) increases are used strategically during the transition from ribbed cuff to main pattern to achieve the correct stitch count

Materials and Gauge

The Noro Elegant is designed to be knitted using Noro Silk Garden yarn in Colorway 395. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 9 balls (50g each) for the smallest size to 13 balls for the largest size. The yarn is worked on 5mm (US8) knitting needles for the main fabric and 4mm (US6) knitting needles for the ribbed edging. Additional tools required include a cable needle for managing cable stitches and stitch holders for securing stitches during construction.

The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 16 stitches and 22 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over the patterned fabric using the 5mm needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements and proper drape of the garment.

Construction Overview

The front piece begins with casting on between 90 and 122 stitches depending on size, worked in 2x2 rib for 11 rows. After transitioning to the larger needles, strategic increases are made to reach the final stitch count of between 103 and 135 stitches. The pattern then proceeds with the 16-row cable and reverse stockinette repeat, which establishes the sweater's elegant textured design. The symmetrical cable placement and refined stitch work create a sophisticated garment suitable for various occasions.
