The Man's Jacket from Noro is a true essential with it's classic and wearable look. Knit in Noro Silk Garden Solo, it features handsome saddle shoulders and knit-in pockets. Basketweave patterning worked throughout the body contrasts with the sleek k2, p2 ribbed sleeves. The shawl collar, worked with the button bands in k1, p1 ribbing, is folded under and sewn in place for a tailored look. Cardigan is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and seamed. Noro Man's Jacket
What is Being Made
The Noro Man's Jacket is an intermediate-level cardigan designed for men, available in five sizes ranging from Small to XX-Large. This seamed jacket features a classic construction with finished chest measurements of 39 to 51 inches (99 to 129.5 cm) and lengths ranging from 28 to 30½ inches (71 to 77.5 cm). The upper arm width varies from 14½ to 17¼ inches (37 to 44 cm) across the size range, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various body types.
Techniques Used
This jacket is constructed using a bottom-up approach, meaning the knitter begins at the lower edge and works upward toward the shoulders and neckline. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for traditional seaming to join the various pieces together. The seamed construction method provides structure and a polished finish to the completed jacket, with individual pieces (front panels, back panel, and sleeves) knitted separately and then assembled.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques essential to garment construction. Knit and purl stitches form the foundation of the fabric, worked in various combinations to create the desired texture and drape. The pattern utilizes ribbing for finishing edges, maintaining the rib pattern as stitches are bound off to create a neat, elastic edge that resists curling. Shaping is achieved through increases (including make one stitches worked through the front and back of stitches, as well as purl increases) and decreases (such as knit two together and purl two together). Stitch markers are used throughout to help track pattern repeats and shaping points, while the pattern includes charted sections indicated by "no stitch" notation where stitches have been decreased or not yet made.
Materials
The Noro Man's Jacket requires Noro Silk Garden Solo yarn in colorway #2, with yardage quantities varying by size: 14 skeins for Small, 16 skeins for Medium, 17 skeins for Large, 18 skeins for X-Large, and 20 skeins for XX-Large. Each skein weighs 50 grams. Construction requires one pair of size US 8 (5mm) needles (or the size needed to obtain proper gauge) for the main knitting, along with a size US H-8 (5mm) crochet hook for finishing details. The jacket is finished with five ¾-inch (20mm) buttons and one ½-inch (13mm) button, providing a classic closure system appropriate for a men's cardigan.
