Noro Motif Tank Dress

What is Being Made

The Noro Motif Tank Dress is a sleeveless crochet garment designed as an experienced-level project. This tank dress features a sophisticated construction method where the entire garment is built from individual motifs that are joined together to create the finished piece. The dress is available in three sizes with finished bust measurements of 33 (36, 39) inches and lengths of 29¼ (31, 32¼) inches, making it a versatile design suitable for various body types.

Construction Techniques

The Noro Motif Tank Dress employs several advanced crochet techniques that contribute to its elegant appearance and structured fit:

  • Motif-Based Construction: The dress is constructed by creating a total of 60 individual motifs—30 for the front and 30 for the back. Each motif is worked as a square using different hook sizes depending on the garment size, allowing for graduated sizing within the same design.
  • Progressive Hook Sizing: Different motifs are worked with progressively larger hooks to create shaping and fit. For example, in the Small size, motifs 1–12 are worked with a size 5 steel hook (1.75mm), motifs 13–24 with a size B/1 hook (2.25mm), and motifs 25–30 with a size C/2 hook (2.75mm). This technique creates natural shaping as the garment progresses.
  • Seamed Construction: After all motifs are completed, the front and back pieces are joined together using a circular construction method. The lower rows of motifs (rows 25–42 for smaller sizes, 29–49 for larger sizes) are joined in a circular arrangement to form the skirt portion. The upper body motifs are then seamed at the side seams to markers, creating a fitted bodice.
  • Lace Elements: The design incorporates lace stitching, with the motifs themselves likely featuring openwork patterns typical of lace crochet. The upper trim is worked in single crochet across the motifs at the neckline.
  • Worked in the Round: The lower skirt portion is joined and worked in a circular construction, allowing for seamless integration of the front and back pieces into a unified garment.
  • Striped Appearance: The use of different hook sizes throughout the construction creates subtle visual striping as the motif sizes increase progressively, adding visual interest to the finished dress.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches to create the motifs and finishing details. The primary stitch structure includes 2-dc cluster (double crochet clusters), which form the basis of the motif construction. Single crochet (sc) is used for the upper trim, where 19 single crochets are worked across each of the 12 motifs around the top of the bodice. The pattern uses standard yarn-over (yo) and loop techniques essential to crochet construction.

Materials

The Noro Motif Tank Dress is designed to be worked with Noro Silk Garden Sock yarn in colorway #S354. Yardage requirements vary by size: 3 skeins for Small and 4 skeins for both Medium and Large sizes. The pattern requires multiple crochet hook sizes to accommodate the progressive sizing technique. Specifically, crafters will need:

  • Size 5 steel crochet hook (1.75mm) — used for Small size motifs 1–12
  • Size B/1 crochet hook (2.25mm) — used for Small motifs 13–24 and Medium motifs 1–12
  • Size C/2 crochet hook (2.75mm) — used for Small motifs 25–30, Medium motifs 13–24, and Large motifs 1–18
  • Size D/3 crochet hook (3.25mm) — used for Medium motifs 25–30 and Large motifs 19–30
  • Size E/4 crochet hook (3.5mm) — used for all sizes during the final 10 rounds of the lower skirt only

Gauge Information

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project, as the motif sizes directly affect the finished garment measurements. The pattern provides specific gauge measurements for each hook size used:

  • One motif using size 5 steel hook (1.75mm) = 2¾ inches (7cm) square
