Noro Ribbed Mitts

What is Being Made

The Noro Ribbed Mitts are a pair of easy-level fingerless gloves designed for adult hands. These mitts feature a classic ribbed construction that provides both stretch and structure. With a finished hand circumference of 7½ inches (19 centimeters) when unstretched and a length of 8 inches (20.5 centimeters), these mitts offer practical wrist and hand coverage while leaving fingers free for dexterity. The ribbed pattern is notably stretchy, making the mitts suitable for larger hands despite the stated measurements.

Techniques Used

The Noro Ribbed Mitts are worked in the round, a fundamental knitting technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for gloves and mittens. This method eliminates the need for seaming and produces a continuous spiral of stitches. The pattern incorporates several essential knitting techniques including:

  • Make one increases – both knitwise and purlwise variations – to shape the mitts where needed
  • Slip, slip, knit decreases (and purlwise variations) to decrease stitches and refine the fit
  • Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points
  • Picking up and knitting or purling along edges to add new stitches from existing loops
  • Yarn overs to create new stitches and contribute to the textured design
  • Slip stitches for edge finishing and pattern transitions

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure of these mitts is ribbing, which alternates knit and purl stitches in vertical columns. Ribbing is prized in knitwear for its elasticity and recovery, making it especially suitable for fitted garments like mitts and gloves. The pattern also employs selvage stitches along edges to facilitate easier seaming should any joining be required. The chart-based instructions include "no stitch" spaces where stitches have been decreased or not yet made, requiring knitters to skip over these designated areas and work only the active stitches shown on the chart.

Materials

The Noro Ribbed Mitts pattern calls for premium yarns and appropriately sized needles:

  • 1 × 100g skein of Noro Silk Garden Sock Solo in #3 (main color)
  • 1 × 100g ball of Noro Silk Garden Sock in #396 (contrast color)
  • One set of five size US 4 (3.5mm) double-pointed needles or the appropriate needle size to achieve gauge
  • Stitch markers for tracking pattern placement
  • Scrap yarn for holding stitches or temporary markers

The use of Noro Silk Garden yarns – available in both the Sock Solo and standard Sock weights – provides a luxurious blend of fibers with beautiful color variation. Double-pointed needles (DPNs) are the traditional choice for small circumference circular knitting, allowing knitters to work seamlessly in the round without the bulk of circular needles.
