Noro The Easy-Peasy Poncho

What is Being Made

The Easy-Peasy Poncho is a beginner-friendly knitted cape-style garment designed for straightforward construction and comfortable wear. This poncho features a relaxed silhouette with finished front length of 20 inches (51 centimeters) and back length of 23 inches (59 centimeters), providing gentle coverage. The shoulder width measures 40 inches (102 centimeters), offering a generous fit suitable for layering over various clothing styles.

Knitting Techniques

This project employs several fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible to beginners while building essential skills. The poncho is worked flat, meaning it is knitted on straight or circular needles in rows rather than in the round, simplifying stitch management and shaping. The construction is seamless, eliminating the need for finishing seams and creating a smooth, professional appearance. The garment is worked bottom-up, beginning at the lower edge and progressing upward toward the shoulders and neckline, which allows knitters to try on the piece as it develops and adjust length as desired.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Easy-Peasy Poncho is primarily constructed using garter stitch, one of the most fundamental and forgiving knitting stitches. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, producing a reversible fabric with distinctive horizontal ridges on both sides. This stitch is ideal for beginners because it requires no complex stitch manipulation and creates a stable, non-curling fabric that is naturally forgiving of tension inconsistencies.

The pattern incorporates several essential knitting techniques to shape and finish the garment:

  • Yarn overs create new stitches by placing yarn over the right-hand needle, often used for decorative effects or lace elements
  • Decrease stitches including slip, slip, knit (SSK) and similar techniques reduce stitch count for shaping the poncho's silhouette
  • Purl stitches add textural variation and are worked by inserting the needle as if to purl
  • Make one stitches increase the stitch count by lifting the strand between stitches and working it
  • Slip stitches move stitches from left needle to right needle without working them, used for edge finishing and seaming preparation
  • Selvage stitches create neat edge stitches that facilitate easier seaming and finishing
  • Stitch markers help track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the knitting process

The pattern includes charted sections where "no stitch" spaces indicate areas where stitches have been decreased or not yet made, requiring knitters to skip over these shaded spaces while working the remaining stitches.

Materials and Tools

The Easy-Peasy Poncho requires two 200-gram balls of Noro Kakigori yarn in colorway #09. Noro Kakigori is a premium yarn known for its beautiful color variations and quality construction. The project calls for a Size US 10 (6 millimeter) circular needle measuring 24 inches (60 centimeters) long, or longer depending on preference, which allows for comfortable working of the poncho's width. A Size US D-3 (3.25 millimeter) crochet hook is included for finishing details such as edging or securing loose ends. Stitch markers assist in tracking pattern sections and shaping increases or decreases throughout construction.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches and 16 rows equaling 4 inches (10 centimeters) over garter stitch using US 10 (6 millimeter) needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements and ensuring the poncho drapes appropriately. Knitters are advised to take time to check gauge before beginning the project to guarantee accurate results.

Purchase was easy and the pattern very easy to follow. However, I don’t love the pattern with the yarn that was recommended. Just too “meshy” for me. Doesn’t seem to set off the yarn in a pretty way.
