Paintbox Yarns Rallying Reversible Scarf

What is Being Made

The Paintbox Yarns Rallying Reversible Scarf is an advanced-level knitted scarf featuring two distinct design options. The completed scarf measures approximately 120 cm (47¼ inches) long by 25 cm (9¾ inches) wide. Both versions showcase reversible construction, allowing the scarf to be worn with either side as the finished face, making it a versatile accessory with two distinct visual presentations.

Design Options

  • Slogan Scarf: Features text or messaging worked into the knitted fabric
  • Stripes and Blocks Scarf: Displays geometric patterning created through color blocking and striped sections

Techniques Used

This pattern employs stranded colorwork techniques, a fundamental method for creating multi-colored knitted fabrics. The stranded approach involves carrying unused yarn colors across the back of the work while knitting with the active color, creating the reversible effect. The scarf is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for traditional two-sided construction where both the right side and wrong side become functional, decorative surfaces.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stocking stitch (stockinette stitch), which creates a smooth, classic knitted fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns on the right side. Stocking stitch is achieved by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows. The colorwork integration involves strategic yarn positioning—bringing both colors to the front and back of the work at designated points to create the pattern while maintaining the reversible quality.

Materials

Yarn: The pattern calls for Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, a standard double-knit weight yarn. Two color options are provided:

  • Slogan Scarf: 2 × 100g balls each of Stormy Grey (A) and Midnight Blue (B)
  • Stripes and Blocks Scarf: 2 × 100g balls each of Bubblegum Pink (A) and Rose Red (B)

Needles: One pair of 4mm (UK 8 – US 6) knitting needles is required for this project.

Tension and Gauge

The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 4mm needles. Checking tension before beginning is essential, as incorrect gauge will result in a scarf that does not match the intended finished dimensions and may require more or less yarn than specified. Knitters should prepare a tension swatch of at least 13 cm (5 inches) square and adjust needle size accordingly if needed.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the complexity of managing stranded colorwork while maintaining consistent tension across multiple colors and creating a reversible fabric that looks finished on both sides.
