Patty Pullover in Juniper Moon Findley DK Dappled

What is Being Made

The Patty Pullover is a women's knitted sweater designed by Pamela Wynne as part of The Penny Collection by Juniper Moon Farm. This pullover is available in eight sizes ranging from XS to 4X, with finished bust measurements from 30 inches (76 cm) to 58 inches (147.5 cm) and lengths from 21½ inches (54 cm) to 25¾ inches (65.5 cm). The design features a classic pullover silhouette worked primarily in the round using circular needles.

Techniques Used

The Patty Pullover employs several key knitting techniques to create its finished structure. The garment is constructed using a provisional cast-on method, which allows for seamless joining and finishing at the neckline. The sweater is worked in the round using circular needles, a technique that creates a seamless fabric and eliminates the need for seaming. The pattern includes armhole shaping with strategic decreases and increases to create proper fit and garment structure. Stitch markers are used throughout to denote pattern repeats and shaping points, helping knitters track their progress through the intricate stitch patterns.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch foundation for the Patty Pullover is Stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The pattern features a decorative Little Lace Stitch that is worked both in the round and flat depending on the garment section. This lace stitch is worked over a multiple of 6 stitches and alternates between pattern rows and plain knit or purl rows to create an open, textured design.

The Little Lace Stitch pattern includes the following elements:

  • Yarn overs (yo) that create deliberate holes in the fabric for the lace effect
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases that pair with the yarn overs to maintain stitch count
  • Slip 2 stitches, knit 1, pass slipped stitches over (s2kpo) a centered double decrease that creates a distinctive lace motif
  • Make one left (m1L) and make one right (m1R) increases for shaping the garment
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) decreases for armhole and shoulder shaping

When worked in the round, the Little Lace Stitch repeats over 4 rounds with knit rounds alternating between lace pattern rounds. When worked flat, the pattern repeats over 4 rows with purl rows on the wrong side alternating between lace pattern rows on the right side.

Materials

The Patty Pullover is knitted with Juniper Moon Farm Findley DK Dappled yarn in color #104 Vacation. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 4 hanks for the smallest sizes (XS and S) to 7 hanks for the largest sizes (3X and 4X). Findley DK is a worsted-weight yarn suitable for the specified gauge.

The pattern requires two sets of needles in different sizes. US 4 (3.5mm) circular and double-pointed needles are used as the main needles for the majority of the garment construction. US 3 (3.25mm) double-pointed needles, one size smaller, are used for ribbed edgings and cuffs to create a tighter, more elastic fabric. The specified gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch when worked with the larger needles.

Additional notions required include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing, and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the construction process.
