Peiros Shawl in Berroco Vibe

What is Being Made

The Peiros Shawl is an intermediate-level triangular shawl designed by Amy Christoffers, featured in Berroco Booklet #402. This knitted wrap measures approximately 70 inches along the lace edge and 40 inches down the center, making it a generous accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Craft and Technique Overview

This is a knitting project that combines two distinct construction techniques. The shawl is worked from a small cast-on and increases progressively outward, creating a triangular silhouette. The design features a garter stitch section paired with a charted lace pattern, allowing knitters to develop skills in both textured and openwork knitting.

Stitches and Pattern Construction

The Peiros Shawl employs the following stitch techniques:

  • Garter Stitch forms one section of the shawl, created by knitting every row for a textured, reversible fabric
  • Yarn Overs (yo) are used for increases and to create the lace pattern throughout the design
  • Charted Lace Pattern is worked in multiple sections, with the chart repeated and varied across the construction sequence
  • The pattern includes a stitch marker to separate the garter stitch section from the charted lace section

Construction follows a specific sequence: the first 24 rows establish Chart 1 (worked 4 times), followed by Rows 7–18 of Chart 1, then Rows 19–26 repeated four times, Rows 27–44 once, Rows 45–54 of Chart 2 repeated four times, Rows 55–76 once, and finally Rows 77–88 repeated until the desired length is achieved.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The pattern calls for Berroco Vibe, a yarn produced by Berroco, Inc. The project requires 8 balls of Berroco Vibe in colorway #1501 Salt, with each ball weighing 50 grams.

Needles and Notions: A 24-inch or longer circular needle in size 10½ (6.50 mm) is required, or a size adjusted to obtain the specified gauge. One stitch marker is needed to track pattern sections.

Gauge and Sizing

Achieving proper gauge is essential for accurate finished measurements. The pattern specifies two gauge measurements:

  • 16 stitches and 26 rows equal 4 inches in Garter Stitch
  • 11 stitches equal 2½ inches over the 17-stitch wide section of the Charted Pattern

Knitters are advised to check gauge before beginning to ensure the finished shawl meets the intended dimensions of approximately 70 inches along the lace edge by 40 inches down the center.

Finishing

After completing all pattern rows and binding off knitwise, the shawl is finished by weaving in all ends and blocking as desired to enhance the lace pattern and shape.
