Plymouth Yarn Kimono in Encore Worsted
What is Being Made
The Plymouth Yarn Kimono in Encore is a seamed cardigan-style garment designed with a relaxed, kimono-inspired silhouette. This knit pattern produces a finished cardigan available in six sizes ranging from Small (38" finished bust) through XXXLarge (59" finished bust), with corresponding length options from 26" to 31". The garment features a generous, comfortable fit ideal for layering and casual wear.
Techniques Used
This pattern is worked using the bottom-up construction method, meaning all pieces are knitted from the lower edges upward before being assembled. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for straightforward shaping and piece construction. Seaming is the primary assembly technique, with the pattern requiring careful sewing of shoulder seams, sleeve cap seams, side seams, and sleeve seams to create the finished garment. The construction includes an optional side vent feature, where the bottom 4" of each side seam can be left open for added movement and style.
Stitches Used
The Plymouth Yarn Kimono employs two fundamental knitting stitches throughout its construction:
- Garter Stitch (garter st): Used for the lower 5" of the back, fronts, and sleeves, creating a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. This stitch provides structure and prevents curling at the garment edges.
- Stockinette Stitch (st st): Comprises the main body of the garment above the garter stitch section, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with a defined V appearance on the right side.
Materials and Gauge
The Plymouth Yarn Kimono is designed for use with Encore Worsted, a durable worsted-weight yarn. The pattern shown features Encore in color 456 rust. Yardage requirements range from 600g (6 balls of 100g) for the Small size to 1,100g (11 balls of 100g) for the XXXLarge size. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches equals 4 inches when worked in stockinette stitch on a US 8 needle. Pattern instructions specify using US 7 and US 8 needles, with the smaller US 7 needles used for ribbed or garter stitch sections and the larger US 8 needles for the main stockinette body. A 32-inch circular needle in size US 7 is required for picking up and working the neckband. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
