Plymouth Yarn Baby's Hooded Cardigan
What is Being Made
This is a baby's hooded cardigan designed for infants in three size options: 0-3 months, 6-12 months, and 18-24 months. The cardigan features a classic button-front closure with five buttons, making it practical for dressing and undressing babies. The garment includes a hood component and is sized to fit chest measurements of 20", 22", or 24" with corresponding lengths of 10½", 11", or 12" and sleeve lengths of 5½", 6", or 7½".
Techniques Used
This pattern employs a bottom-up construction method, meaning knitters begin at the lower edge of the body and work upward. The cardigan is worked seamless, which reduces finishing work and creates a more comfortable garment for a baby. The body is worked flat on circular needles using back-and-forth rows, while the sleeves are worked in the round using double-pointed needles. This hybrid approach combines the ease of flat knitting for the main body with the efficiency of circular knitting for the sleeves. The sleeves are then joined to the body and worked together to create the yoke section, which is a common technique for achieving a well-fitted armhole and shoulder area.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for baby garments. Garter stitch (knitting every row) forms the ribbed edging at the bottom of the body and the selvage edges along the front bands, providing structure and a finished appearance. The main fabric is worked in stockinette stitch (abbreviated as st st), which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric ideal for baby clothing. Increases are incorporated using yarn overs and knit-two-together decreases to shape the sleeves and create the necessary shaping for proper fit. Buttonholes are created using yarn overs paired with knit-two-together decreases, positioned strategically along the front edge—either on the right front for girls or the left front for boys, depending on the desired button placement.
Materials
The pattern calls for Plymouth Yarn Dreambaby DK, a yarn specifically formulated for baby garments. Knitters will need 3 balls of yarn for the smallest size, 3 balls for the 6-12 month size, and 4 balls for the 18-24 month size, with each ball weighing 50 grams. The recommended color is 147 Cameo Pink. The yarn is worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on US Size 6 (4mm) needles after blocking. Knitters will need both US Size 3 (3.25mm) and US Size 6 (4mm) needles, specifically a 24-inch circular needle for the body and double-pointed needles for sleeve construction. Additional notions include 4 stitch markers, 4 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction, and 5 buttons measuring 18mm each from Dill #251155.
