Plymouth Yarn Top Down Child's Sweater

Project Overview

This is a seamless, top-down child's cardigan knit in Encore Chunky yarn from Plymouth Yarn (Pattern No. 3224). The sweater is designed to fit children in sizes 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, 10, and 12, with finished chest measurements ranging from 26 inches to 34 inches. The cardigan features a classic two-color striped design and includes gender-specific buttonhole placement options for both girls and boys.

Construction Technique

This cardigan employs a top-down construction method, beginning at the neckline and working downward to the hem. The garment is knit worked flat on circular needles rather than in the round, allowing for easy shaping and customization. The seamless construction eliminates the need for seaming, creating a more polished finished garment with minimal finishing work required.

Stitch Details and Shaping

The pattern uses stockinette stitch (abbreviated as stst) as the primary fabric, combined with garter stitch borders for the button bands and front edges. Strategic increases are worked at marked intervals throughout the yoke to create the necessary shaping for the armholes and sleeve cap. The pattern specifies yarn over (yo) and knit two together (k2tog) decreases to create functional buttonholes placed at regular intervals along the front band.

Construction begins by casting on 31 to 47 stitches depending on the size, with stitch markers placed to delineate the front sections and sleeve areas. Increases are made by knitting into the front and back of stitches (kfb) at each marker on right-side rows, systematically expanding the sweater from the neckline outward. This shaping continues until the front sections reach the appropriate width, at which point the sleeve stitches are separated and worked independently.

Striping Pattern

The sweater features a two-color stripe design using color A (9601) as the primary color and color B (133) as the accent color. The specific stripe sequence and color changes are integrated throughout the stockinette stitch sections while maintaining the garter stitch borders in the designated color.

Materials and Gauge

This project requires Encore Chunky or Chunky Tweed yarn from Plymouth Yarn. Yardage requirements are 4 to 7 balls of 100 grams each in the main color, depending on the child's size, plus 1 ball of the contrasting color for all sizes. The recommended gauge is 14 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch using size 10 needles, which ensures proper fit and fabric drape.

Needles and Notions

The pattern calls for one 24-inch circular needle in size 9 for the button bands and one 24-inch circular needle in size 10 for the main fabric. Additional supplies include 5 to 7 buttons (depending on size), 4 stitch markers for tracking shaping points, and 2 stitch holders for temporarily holding stitches during sleeve separation. Optional straight needles of the larger size may be used for working the sleeves separately for added convenience.

Button Band Construction

The cardigan includes garter stitch button bands worked on 5 to 7 stitches depending on the size. The pattern accommodates both girls' and boys' preferences by allowing buttonhole placement on either the right front (for girls) or left front (for boys). Buttonholes are created using the yarn over and knit two together decrease technique, with the first buttonhole positioned after 4 rows of the garter stitch band and subsequent buttonholes spaced every 12 rows thereafter.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern provides five distinct size options designed to accommodate children from ages 3/4 years through 12 years. Each size includes specific stitch counts and finished measurements, allowing knitters to select the appropriate size based on the child's chest measurement. The top-down construction method enables easy adjustments to length and fit during the knitting process.
