Plymouth Yarn Ladies Vest - Pattern No. 3266
What Is Being Made
This pattern features the Pimo Rino Ladies Vest, a classic sleeveless waistcoat designed to be worked from the bottom up. The vest is available in seven size options, ranging from 32" to 56" to fit, with finished measurements from 36" to 60" and finished lengths from 22" to 26". The garment is constructed using seamed, flat knitting techniques and features a button front closure with five buttons.
Techniques Used
This vest is created using bottom-up construction, meaning you begin at the lower edge and work upward toward the shoulders. The pattern employs flat knitting on straight needles for the body pieces, with finishing details worked on a circular needle. The vest uses seaming to join the front and back pieces together, creating clean, professional seams along the sides. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreases at the sides for waist definition and bind-offs for armhole and shoulder shaping.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern is a textured pattern stitch that alternates knit and purl stitches in a regular repeat. The pattern stitch is worked over four rows: Row 1 and Row 3 are identical (P2, then repeat K2, P2 to end), Row 2 reverses the stitch orientation (K2, then repeat P2, K2 to end), and Row 4 is worked entirely in knit. This creates a subtle, reversible texture throughout the garment. 1x1 ribbing is used for the lower edge and collar details, providing elasticity and a finished appearance. The ribbing alternates knit and purl stitches in a single-stitch repeat.
Materials
The vest is worked in Pima Rino yarn, a premium fiber blend. The pattern requires 7 to 11 balls of 50g weight depending on size, with the sample shown in color 3, a light brown shade. Needles required include US 6 and US 7 straight needles, plus a 24" circular needle in US 6 for collar work. The gauge is 18 stitches over 4 inches when worked on US 7 needles over the pattern stitch and slightly stretched. Five buttons are needed to complete the front closure.
Construction Details
The back piece begins with a cast-on of 77 to 123 stitches depending on size, worked in 1x1 ribbing for 2.5 inches. Stitches are increased evenly across the final ribbing row before switching to larger needles and the main pattern stitch. The piece is then shaped with decreases at each side over multiple rows to create waist definition. Armhole shaping is introduced by binding off stitches at the beginning of rows, followed by shoulder shaping at the top. The front pieces follow a similar construction method with additional shaping for the button bands and neckline. The collar is worked using the smaller circular needle to pick up stitches around the neckline opening.
