Plymouth Yarn Sea Span Cables and Texture Pullover

What is Being Made

The Sea Span Cables and Texture Pullover is a knitted sweater designed to be worked from the bottom up using the seamed, worked-flat construction method. This pullover features a classic crew neckline and is available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2X-Large, with finished bust measurements from 35 inches to 52 inches and lengths between 23 and 24.5 inches. The garment showcases decorative cable and texture elements as focal points of the design.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques to create its finished appearance:

  • Bottom-Up Construction: The sweater is knitted beginning at the lower edge and progressing upward toward the shoulders and neckline.
  • Worked Flat: The body and sleeves are knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring seaming to join pieces together.
  • Seamed Assembly: Finished pieces are sewn together using a three-needle bind-off technique for the shoulder seams, with additional seaming required to join side and sleeve seams.
  • Cable Work: Decorative cables are integrated throughout the design using cable needles to cross stitches and create dimensional texture patterns.
  • Top-Down Sleeves: Sleeve stitches are picked up along the armhole edge and worked downward from the top, allowing for custom fit adjustments.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates several fundamental and decorative stitches:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St St): The primary stitch used throughout the body, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with a flat appearance.
  • K2/P2 Rib: A knit-two, purl-two ribbing pattern used for the lower edge and cuff sections. This reversible rib pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches plus 2, alternating knit and purl stitches to create vertical columns that provide elasticity and a finished edge.
  • Seed Stitch: A textured stitch pattern alternating single knits and purls in a checkerboard formation, worked over a multiple of 2 stitches. This stitch appears in the upper body section and adds visual interest and texture to the pullover.
  • Cable Stitches: Multiple cable variations are used, including 2/1 Right Purl Cross (2/1 RPC), 2/1 Left Purl Cross (2/1 LPC), and 2/2 Right Cross (2/2 RC). These cables are worked according to a Cable Chart and create the dimensional cable patterns that define the sweater's design.

Materials and Gauge

The Sea Span Cables and Texture Pullover is designed to be knitted with Sea Isle Cotton yarn in the color Oyster (color #8). Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 4 skeins for the smallest size to 7 skeins for the largest size, with each skein weighing 100 grams. This cotton yarn provides a breathable, lightweight fabric suitable for warm-weather wear.

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch using US size 9 [5.5mm] needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit and finished measurements.

The needle requirements include a US size 7 [4.5mm] 16-inch circular needle for the ribbed cuff sections and a US size 9 [5.5mm] needle for the main body knitting. Additional materials needed for completion include stitch markers, safety pins or removable stitch markers, a stitch holder, a cable needle for working cable stitches, and an extra US size 9 [5.5mm] knitting needle for the three-needle bind-off technique used to join shoulder seams.
