Pravda Pullover in Juniper Moon Herriot Great

What Is Being Made

The Pravda Pullover is a knitted sweater designed by Pamela Wynne, featured in the October Collection from Juniper Moon Farm. This pullover is available in eight sizes ranging from XXS to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 32 inches (81.5 cm) to 53¾ inches (136.5 cm) and a consistent length of 23½ inches (59.5 cm). The garment is shown in size XS with 2 inches of positive ease, making it a comfortable, relaxed-fit sweater suitable for everyday wear.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Pravda Pullover employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques to create a sophisticated finished garment. The sweater is constructed using a top-down method, with the body and sleeves joined together in the round. This construction approach allows for seamless integration of the sleeve caps and body, reducing finishing work.

Stranded colorwork is a key design element in this pullover. The pattern incorporates three colors of yarn worked simultaneously in a stranded technique, where unused yarn is carried across the back of the work. To maintain proper tension and color dominance, the pattern specifies a particular carrying order: the lower-listed color number is carried beneath the higher-listed color. This means CC1 (Oyster Mushroom) is carried beneath the main color, and CC2 (Orange Blossom) is carried beneath either CC1 or the main color, depending on the colorwork section. This attention to color dominance ensures even tension and a polished appearance in the finished colorwork.

The body begins with a German Twisted cast-on, a technique that creates a neat, elastic edge ideal for ribbed sections. The initial ribbing uses a knit 2, purl 2 (k2, p2) pattern worked on smaller needles, which creates a snug, stretchy cuff that helps the sweater stay in place.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern on the right side.
  • Ribbing (k2, p2): Used for the neckband and initial body ribbing to create stretch and elasticity.
  • Stranded Colorwork: A technique where two or more colors are worked in the same row, with unused colors carried across the back of the work to create color patterns.
  • Knit (k) and Purl (p) stitches: The foundational stitches that form all other stitch patterns in the sweater.

Materials and Gauge

The Pravda Pullover is designed to be worked with Juniper Moon Farm Herriot Great yarn in three colors. The main color (MC) requires 6 to 10 hanks depending on size, worked in color #110 Emerald, which provides the primary color of the sweater. Contrast Color 1 (CC1) uses 1 to 2 hanks of color #102 Oyster Mushroom, while Contrast Color 2 (CC2) requires 1 hank of color #111 Orange Blossom. These three colors work together to create the stranded colorwork design throughout the garment.

The pattern calls for multiple needle sizes to accommodate different sections of the sweater. US 8 (5 mm) circular needles in both 24-inch (60 cm) and 16-inch (40 cm) lengths, along with a set of double-pointed needles, are used as the main needles for working the body and sleeves in Stockinette stitch. US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles, one size smaller than the main needles, are used for ribbed sections. A US 6 (4 mm) 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle or set of five double-pointed needles is used specifically for the neckband, creating a progressively tighter edge.

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 18 stitches and 22 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch using the larger needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements, and the pattern recommends blocking the finished sweater to set the stitches and even out the fabric.
