Ribbed Lace Scarf Knitting Pattern

Project Overview

This advanced beginner knitting pattern from Cascade Yarns creates an elegant scarves featuring a combination of classic ribbed textures and delicate lace elements. Designed by Pam Bledsoe, the finished scarf measures approximately 7 inches wide by 64 inches long, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Materials and Tools

This pattern uses Cascade Yarns Baby Alpaca Chunky, a luxurious yarn made from 100% baby alpaca. You will need 3 skeins in Color #593. The project requires two sets of needles: Size 11 needles and Size 13 needles, along with a tapestry needle for finishing. Additional materials include a device or method for creating two 4½-inch pompoms, which serve as decorative end embellishments.

Gauge and Tension

The pattern establishes a gauge of 18 stitches equals 4 inches when working the 1 x 1 rib pattern with size 11 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions and ensuring the scarf drapes appropriately.

Stitch Techniques

This pattern incorporates two primary stitch patterns that work together to create visual interest and texture:

  • 1 x 1 Rib Pattern: A fundamental knitting stitch that alternates knit and purl stitches across each row. This creates vertical columns of texture that provide elasticity and structure. Row 1 works as *k1, p1* repeated until one stitch remains, finished with k1. Row 2 reverses this sequence with *p1, k1* repeated until one stitch remains, finished with p1.
  • Ribbed Lace Pattern Stitch: A more complex stitch combining yarn overs with decreases to create openwork elements within a ribbed framework. Row 1 (right side) works as *yo, k2tog, k1, sl 1, k1* repeated until 2 stitches remain, finished with yo, k2tog. Row 2 works as *yo, k2tog, k1, p1, k1* repeated until 2 stitches remain, finished with yo, k2tog. The yarn overs create the lace holes while the k2tog (knit two together) decreases maintain stitch count and form the lace pattern.

Construction Method

The scarf is constructed in three distinct sections using a needle size progression technique:

  • Begin by casting on 27 stitches with size 11 needles, leaving a long tail for later pompom attachment. Work the 1 x 1 rib pattern for 3 inches to create a solid ribbed border.
  • Switch to size 13 needles and begin working the ribbed lace pattern stitch. Continue repeating this pattern until the total scarf length reaches approximately 58 inches (measured with slight stretching). The larger needle size creates a more open, lacy appearance in this central section while the ribbed elements maintain structure.
  • Return to size 11 needles and work the 1 x 1 rib pattern for an additional 3 inches to create a matching ribbed border on the opposite end. Cast off in pattern, leaving a long tail for the second pompom attachment.

Finishing Techniques

The pattern includes detailed instructions for creating and attaching decorative pompoms. Two 4½-inch pompoms are constructed using a pompom-making device, with approximately 40 grams of yarn recommended for each pompom. The pattern provides a helpful weighing method to ensure both pompoms are uniform in size. Each pompom is securely attached to the scarf ends using the long cast-on and cast-off tails threaded through the end stitches with a tapestry needle, pulling tightly so the scarf edges meet and roll naturally to display the right side of the fabric.
