Rilke Duster and Tank in Berroco Modern Linen

What is Being Made

The Rilke Duster is a lightweight, open-front cardigan-style top designed by Alison Green. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a relaxed, sophisticated garment with a finished bust measurement ranging from 40 inches to 75 inches across twelve sizes, accommodating a wide range of body types. The duster features a consistent length of 36 inches for all sizes and is designed to be worn with approximately 6 to 12 inches of positive ease, creating a comfortable, flowing silhouette. The garment includes a 5.5 to 7.5 inch gap in the front when worn open, emphasizing its cardigan-style construction.

Construction Technique

The Rilke Duster is worked seamlessly from the bottom up in a single piece using circular needles. The front and back panels are divided at the underarm, allowing for independent shaping of each section. Shoulders are shaped using short rows, a technique that creates gradual increases and decreases to form proper shoulder angles without visible steps. Once the front and back pieces are complete, the shoulders are joined together using the three-needle bind-off method, which creates a strong, elastic seam by binding off live stitches from two needles simultaneously.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Rilke Duster incorporates multiple stitch patterns to create visual interest and texture. Stockinette stitch forms the foundation of the garment, providing a smooth, classic knit fabric. The design also features a lace pattern that is worked in repeating sequences. The stripe sequence alternates between 16 rows of stockinette stitch and 12 rows of lace pattern, with each complete stripe sequence measuring 4 inches in length after blocking. This creates a balanced visual rhythm, with each individual stripe measuring approximately 2 inches in height.

Yarn and Materials

The Rilke Duster is designed to be knitted using Berroco Modern Linen, a yarn that weighs 100 grams per hank. The pattern calls for Berroco Modern Linen in colorway #11305 Truffle, with yardage requirements ranging from 4 hanks for the smallest sizes to 7 hanks for the largest sizes. This linen-based yarn creates a breathable, drape-friendly fabric ideal for a duster-style garment.

Needles and Tools

Construction requires 32-inch circular needles in two sizes: size 4 (3.5 mm) and size 5 (3.75 mm), or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge. A spare needle in size 5 (3.75 mm) is required for the three-needle bind-off technique used to join the shoulders. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and waste yarn for holding stitches temporarily during construction.

Gauge

Achieving proper gauge is essential for accurate finished measurements. In stockinette stitch on the larger needle, the gauge is 20 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches. When working the lace pattern on the larger needle, the gauge is 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches. The complete stripe sequence, combining both stockinette and lace pattern sections, measures 4 inches in total length. All gauge measurements are taken after blocking, so blocking is an important step before final assembly to ensure accurate sizing.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The intermediate skill level reflects the combination of techniques required: working in the round with circular needles, executing lace patterns, shaping with short rows, and performing a three-needle bind-off. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions and managing multiple stitches on circular needles before beginning this project.
