What Is Being Made

The Robson cardigan is a knitted garment designed by Quails Studio for Rowan. This intermediate-level project creates a classic cardigan with cable pattern detailing, available in nine different sizes ranging from 71-76cm to 152-157cm chest measurements. The finished garment features a structured silhouette with cable panels integrated throughout the design.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level. The construction begins with a ribbed cast-on edge and incorporates several key knitting techniques:

• Moss stitch forms the primary fabric base, providing a textured, reversible surface
• Cable patterns are worked using the C4B cable cross stitch, which involves slipping stitches onto a cable needle, holding them at the back of work, knitting the next stitches, then knitting from the cable needle
• Side panel patterns repeat over 19 rows and are worked simultaneously with the back chart
• Back chart patterns repeat over 36 rows, creating coordinated cable detailing across the back piece
• Shoulder shaping is achieved through strategic cast-offs at the beginning of rows
• Neck shaping is incorporated during the shoulder shaping process

Stitches Used

The Robson cardigan employs several fundamental and decorative stitches:

• Knit stitch (K) and purl stitch (P) form the foundation of all pattern work
• Rib pattern (alternating K1, P1) creates the elastic edge at the cast-on, measuring 4cm in length

Materials and Equipment

The Robson cardigan is worked using Rowan Kid Classic yarn, a soft and lightweight fiber. The pattern requires 12 to 19 balls of 50-gram skeins depending on the finished size selected. The photographed sample is shown in the colorway Feather 828.

Knitting is worked on 4mm (US 6) needles, with tension measured at 24 stitches and 35 rows over 10cm when working moss stitch on these needles. Additional equipment includes a cable needle for managing cable crosses, stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches during shaping, and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points.

Pattern Structure and Sizing

The pattern provides comprehensive sizing across nine garment sizes, with actual bust measurements ranging from 109cm to 189cm. The back piece begins with 124 to 230 cast-on stitches depending on size selection. The cardigan is worked to a length of 67 to 81cm from cast-on to shoulder, with specific shaping instructions for each size. The left front and additional pieces are worked following the established pattern techniques, ensuring consistency across the finished garment.
