Product Description
Romy Sweater in MODE at Rowan Alpaca Wool
What is Being Made
Romy is a top-down seamless sweater designed by Quail Studio for MODE at Rowan. This garment is constructed using the top-down seamless knitting method, which allows knitters to build the sweater from the neckline downward in one continuous piece, eliminating the need for seaming. The pattern includes a back yoke with shaping details and offers nine size options ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) chest to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches) chest, with actual garment measurements from 120 cm to 205 cm.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design:
- Top-down seamless construction: The sweater is worked from the neckline downward as a single piece, eliminating seams and allowing for easy adjustments during knitting
- Short-row shaping: The pattern uses wrap and turn (W&T) techniques to shape the back yoke, creating a fitted shoulder area without the need for binding off and seaming
- Increases for armhole shaping: The pattern incorporates M1L (make one left) and M1R (make one right) increases to shape the armholes, creating a tailored fit
- Circular needle construction: The body is worked on circular needles once the pieces are joined, allowing for seamless in-the-round knitting
- Striped colorwork: The pattern features a stripe sequence alternating between two colors of yarn
Stitches Used
Romy is primarily constructed using stocking stitch (stockinette stitch), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side. The stitch pattern is worked in rows on the yoke and then continues in the round once the body is joined. The stripe sequence alternates between 6 rows of Yarn B (Currant) and 4 rows of Yarn A (French), creating a regular, repeating color pattern throughout the body of the sweater.
Materials and Tools
The Romy sweater is knitted using Alpaca Wool yarn from MODE at Rowan, a blend that combines the softness of alpaca with the durability of wool. The pattern requires two colors: French (013) in Yarn A and Currant (020) in Yarn B. Quantities vary by size, ranging from 8 to 10 balls of Yarn A (50gm each) and 4 to 6 balls of Yarn B, depending on the chosen size.
The pattern is worked on 3.75mm (US 5) needles. Knitters will need both straight needles for the initial yoke shaping and circular needles: a 100cm circular needle for the body once joined, and a 40cm circular needle for the neckband and sleeves. Additional supplies include stitch markers and stitch holders for managing stitches during construction.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern is worked to a tension of 23 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm measured over stocking stitch using 3.75mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements. The back yoke shaping measures approximately 5.5 to 9.5 cm from the cast-on edge to the mid-back, depending on size, ensuring a properly fitted shoulder area.
