Rowan Gust Cowl by Lisa Richardson
What is Being Made
The Rowan Gust is a knitted cowl designed to be worked downwards in one piece, beginning at the neck edge. This intermediate-level project creates a versatile neck accessory available in three sizes to fit bust measurements of 71-97 cm (28-38 in), 102-127 cm (40-50 in), and 132-157 cm (52-62 in). The finished cowl features an actual circumference at the lower edge of 106 cm (41¾ in), 135 cm (53¼ in), or 174 cm (68½ in) depending on the size selected.
Techniques Used
This cowl employs several key knitting techniques to create its textured appearance. The pattern utilizes bobble stitches distributed throughout the fabric, which are created using the special abbreviation MB (make bobble). The bobble technique involves knitting into the front and back of a stitch multiple times, then passing stitches over to create a dimensional, textured embellishment. Additionally, the pattern incorporates increases worked at regular intervals using the Kfb (knit into front and back) abbreviation, which gradually expands the circumference of the cowl as it is worked downwards from the neck opening. The cowl is constructed using circular knitting in the round, with stitches distributed evenly across double-pointed needles before transitioning to a circular needle.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches in the ribbed sections
- Make Bobble (MB): A special stitch created by working (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1) all into a single stitch, then turning and working rows of purling and knitting before passing multiple stitches over the first stitch to create a raised bobble texture
- Kfb (Knit into Front and Back): An increase stitch that creates two stitches from one, used strategically to shape the cowl
- Ribbing (K2, P2): Worked in the initial rounds to create elasticity at the neck edge
Materials
The Rowan Gust requires Rowan Tweed Haze yarn in quantities of 2, 3, or 3 x 50-gram balls depending on size selection. The pattern is photographed in the colorway Rainy 552. Needles required include a set of 4 double-pointed needles in 6mm (US size 10) and one 6mm (US size 10) circular needle measuring no more than 80 cm in length. The tension specification is 14.5 stitches and 20 rows to 10 centimeters, measured over the bobble pattern using 6mm needles.
