Rowan 01 Wrap

What is Being Made

The Rowan 01 Wrap is a long, elegant shawl designed by Annika Andreawolke. This seamless knitted wrap measures 61 cm (24 inches) wide and 220 cm (86½ inches) long, making it a generous accessory suitable for draping and layering. The extended length and moderate width create a versatile piece that can be worn as a traditional wrap, shawl, or scarf.

Techniques Used

This wrap is constructed using seamless knitting worked flat on straight needles, eliminating the need for seaming. The design incorporates striping as a primary design element, created by alternating between two coordinating yarn colors throughout the project. The pattern is worked from a single cast-on edge to the final bind-off, maintaining consistent stitch and row counts across the entire length.

Stitches Used

The Rowan 01 Wrap employs a simple yet effective stitch pattern that repeats over just two rows. The pattern consists of knit stitches (K) and purl stitches (P) arranged in a regular sequence: knit 3 stitches, then work a repeating unit of purl 1, knit 1, purl 1, followed by knit 3 stitches. This two-row pattern is maintained consistently throughout the entire wrap while the stripe color sequence changes. The straightforward stitch combination makes this project suitable for Skill Level 1 knitters.

Materials

  • Yarn: Rowan Alpaca Classic in two colors—Eclipse (Color A) and Coastal Mélange (Color B)—with 8 x 25 gram balls of each color required, totaling 200 grams per color
  • Needles: One pair of 3¾mm (US Size 5) straight needles
  • Tension: 25 stitches and 48 rows measured over 10 centimeters using the specified needle size and yarn

Pattern Construction Details

The wrap begins with casting on 153 stitches using yarn A and 3¾mm needles. The two-row stitch pattern is established immediately and maintained throughout the project. The stripe sequence is introduced after the initial pattern rows: working 2 rows in yarn B, followed by 2 rows in yarn A, with this 4-row stripe repeat continuing until the shawl reaches its full length of 220 centimeters. The pattern concludes with the final 2 rows worked in yarn A, ending with the right side facing for a clean bind-off.
