Rowan Blast Cardigan by Lisa Richardson
What is Being Made
The Rowan Blast is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Lisa Richardson. This garment is available in nine size options, ranging from a 71-76 cm bust measurement (28-30 inches) up to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches), with corresponding finished bust measurements from 105 cm to 187.5 cm. The cardigan features button-front closure and is constructed using classic knitting techniques suitable for knitters with intermediate experience.
Techniques Used
The Rowan Blast employs several fundamental knitting techniques to create its structure and shaping. Garter stitch is used for the lower edge sections, providing a textured, reversible fabric. Stockinette stitch forms the main body of the garment, creating a smooth, classic appearance. The pattern incorporates increases (M1 method) strategically placed with stitch markers to shape the sleeves in a graduated manner. Decreases are worked at specific intervals to shape the front slope and shoulder lines, with cast-off sequences used to define the shoulder shaping. The construction method involves working flat pieces—back, left front, right front, and sleeves—which are subsequently assembled.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch (g st): Used for the initial cuff sections of sleeves and edge details, creating a ridged, textured appearance
- Stockinette stitch (st st): The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, worked in knit and purl rows alternately to create a smooth, flat fabric
- Make one increase (M1): Used to add stitches for sleeve shaping at marked intervals
- Decreases: Single decreases worked at the end of rows to create the front slope shaping
- Cast off: Used in graduated sequences to shape the shoulders
Materials and Tools
The Rowan Blast is knitted using Rowan Tweed Haze yarn, a worsted-weight yarn supplied in 50-gram balls. The pattern requires 6 to 10 balls depending on the size selected (photographed in the Winter 550 colorway). Two pairs of needles are essential: 5½mm (US 9) needles for casting on and working the initial garter stitch sections, and 6mm (US 10) needles for the main stockinette stitch body. A 5½mm (US 9) circular needle measuring at least 120 cm long is also required, likely for neckline finishing. The cardigan is fastened with three shell effect buttons measuring 2.2 cm, which are used showing the reverse of the button.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a tension of 14.5 stitches and 20 rows to 10 centimeters, measured over stockinette stitch using the 6mm (US 10) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements across all nine size options.
