Rowan Martha Crochet Sweater
What is Being Made
The Rowan Martha is a crocheted pullover sweater designed by Emma Wright. This intermediate-level garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from bust measurements of 71–76 cm (28–30 in) up to 152–157 cm (60–62 in), making it suitable for a wide range of body types. The sweater features a classic construction with a defined back and front, shoulder shaping, and structured body panels.
Techniques Used
The Martha employs several key crochet techniques to create its finished design. The garment utilizes color work through a striped pattern that alternates between multiple yarn colors across the back and front panels. Bobble stitch motifs are incorporated into the striped sections, adding textural interest and visual depth to the fabric. The pattern includes shoulder shaping achieved through strategic decreasing with double crochet decreases (dc2tog), allowing the garment to fit properly across the shoulders and upper body. Back loop only (BLO) construction is employed in specific sections to create distinct fabric characteristics. The sweater is worked in separate panels—back and front—which are then assembled, a traditional approach that allows for precise sizing and fit.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout the Martha is the double crochet (dc), which forms the foundation of the fabric and creates a medium-weight, structured textile. The pattern features bobble stitches (MB) worked at regular intervals within the striped sections, typically appearing once every four stitches on designated rows to create a bumpy, dimensional surface. Double crochet two stitches together (dc2tog) is used for decreasing at the shoulders, allowing the armhole and neckline areas to be shaped appropriately. Chain stitches (ch) are used at the beginning of rows as turning chains. The back loop only technique adds variation in stitch definition where specified in the pattern.
Materials: Yarn and Hooks
The Martha is designed to be worked with Rowan Alpaca Soft DK yarn, a lightweight worsted-weight yarn in 50-gram balls. The pattern calls for three coordinating colorways: Simply White (color A, 201), Autumn Gold (color B, 220), and Brick (color C, 218). Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 2 to 3 balls of each color depending on the finished bust measurement. The recommended tool is a 4mm (US G/6) crochet hook. The pattern specifies a tension of 18 double crochet stitches by 22 double crochet rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) when worked with the specified hook and yarn, ensuring proper fit and drape across all sizes.
