Product Description

Bamboo from Rowan Textured Tweed Haze is a gorgeous must-have women’s pullover knit in Tweed Haze, a fuzzy and color-filled yarn blend of mohair, alpaca, polyamide, cotton, and polyester that is airy and light. The sweater features a comfy design with side splits, deep turned-back cuffs, dropped shoulders, and a cozy turtleneck with a diagonal rib pattern. Bamboo is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The turtleneck stitches are picked up and worked in the round. The diagonal rib patterns are in chart form only.

Rowan Bamboo Sweater by Georgia Farrell

What Is Being Made

This is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed to fit bust measurements ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) up to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches), with nine different size options available. The garment features a classic pullover construction with shaped shoulders, a structured neckline, and tailored shaping throughout the front and back pieces.

Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create a sophisticated finished garment. Reverse stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, refined texture. Cable work is incorporated as a decorative element, indicated by the special abbreviation Cr3L (cross 3 left), which involves slipping stitches onto a cable needle to create twisted, dimensional details. The pattern requires shaping through decreasing at the neckline and shoulders, worked over multiple rows and alternating rows to create smooth, professional-looking armhole and neck edges. Stitch holders are used to manage stitches temporarily during construction, particularly for the collar and front neck shaping.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The sweater primarily uses reverse stockinette stitch (rev st st) as the main fabric, which creates a subtle, elegant appearance. Pattern stitches are worked throughout the garment, with tension specifications indicating that the patterned sections require 16 stitches and 21 rows to measure 10 cm when worked on 6mm needles. Cable stitches, created using the Cr3L abbreviation, add textural interest and visual depth to the design. The pattern maintains stitch consistency across front and back pieces while incorporating strategic decreases for shaping.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern calls for Rowan Tweed Haze yarn in 50-gram balls, photographed in the colorway Setting Sun 555. The required needles include one pair of 5½mm (US 9) needles, one pair of 6mm (US 10) needles, a 5½mm (US 9) circular needle no longer than 40 cm for neckline work, and a cable needle for managing cable stitches. Working tension is specified as 14½ stitches and 20 rows over 10 cm in reverse stockinette stitch using 6mm needles, and 16 stitches and 21 rows over 10 cm in pattern, also using 6mm needles.

Construction Details

The sweater is constructed using separate front and back pieces with coordinated shaping. The back piece is worked first, establishing the overall length and shoulder line. The front piece follows the back pattern but includes additional neck shaping, with decreases worked over 4 rows and then alternating rows to create a gradual, flattering neckline curve. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through strategic cast-offs worked at the beginning of rows, with the exact number of stitches cast off varying by size. The collar is formed by slipping center stitches onto a holder for later finishing, allowing for a neat, structured neckline.
