Product Description
Rowan Dandelion from Bloom 2 is
a lovely women’s vest with a crew neckline and ties on the side knit in Baby
Cashsoft Merino. This beautiful sweater is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up, and the shoulders are seamed using the three-needle bind-off method. The neckband
stitches are picked up along the neck edge and worked in the round. The four
ties are knit separately and joined when shaping armholes. Baby Cashsoft Merino
is a wonderfully soft yarn that will create next-to-skin-soft, warm, and
snuggly fabrics.

Rowan Dandelion Waistcoat by Erika Knight
What is Being Made
The Rowan Dandelion is an intermediate-level knitted waistcoat designed to fit bust measurements ranging from 81–86 cm (32–34 in) through to 122–127 cm (48–50 in). The finished garment features actual bust measurements of 98–140 cm (38½–55 in) across five size options, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various body types.
Techniques Used
This waistcoat employs several key knitting techniques to create its structured silhouette. Ribbed edging is worked at the side seams and neckline to provide elasticity and a neat finish. Stockinette stitch forms the main body fabric, creating a smooth, classic appearance. Decreasing is used strategically to shape the armholes, with techniques including K2tog (knit two together) and sl 1, K1, psso (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over) to create tapered shaping. The waistcoat features tied closures that are knitted separately and then joined to the back piece using a joining technique that secures the ties while simultaneously shaping the garment.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) – the primary stitch forming stockinette stitch fabric
- Purl (P) – used in ribbed sections and to reverse stockinette areas
- Rib stitch – alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1) creating vertical columns of texture
- K2tog (knit two together) – a right-leaning decrease for armhole shaping
- Sl 1, K1, psso (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over) – a left-leaning decrease for balanced shaping
- Purl two together (P tog) – a decrease worked on wrong-side rows
Materials
The Rowan Dandelion is knitted using Rowan Baby Cashsoft Merino yarn, a luxurious blend combining the softness of merino wool with cashmere characteristics. Yardage requirements range from 8 to 12 balls of 50-gram skeins depending on size selection. The pattern was photographed in the colorway Nutkin (shade 121). Knitting needles required include one pair of 3½mm (US 4) needles for the main fabric, plus an additional 3½mm (US 4) needle for casting off at the shoulders. A 3¼mm (US 3) circular needle no longer than 40 cm is needed for neckline finishing. The recommended tension is 23 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm measured over stockinette stitch using the 3½mm needles.
Pattern Structure
The waistcoat construction begins with the back piece, which is worked straight in stockinette stitch with ribbed side seams until the armhole shaping point at approximately 43.5–45.5 cm depending on size. Separately knitted tie closures are then joined to the back piece using a clever joining technique that creates decreases while attaching the ties, simultaneously shaping the armholes. The pattern uses stitch markers to denote key shaping points and includes detailed row-by-row instructions for maintaining correct stitch patterns throughout construction.
