Rowan Trousers by Lisa Richardson

What is Being Made

The Rowan Trousers are a pair of fitted knitted trousers designed by Lisa Richardson. This is a skill level 3 knitting project available in five sizes to fit hip measurements ranging from 86–91 cm up to 127–132 cm. The trousers feature shaping at the centre front and back with decorative "seam" lines, a fitted waistband, and are constructed using a bottom-up, seamed approach worked in the round.

Techniques Used

These trousers are worked in the round using circular needles, which creates a seamless construction for the leg sections. The pattern employs a bottom-up construction method, meaning the legs are knitted from the cuff upward toward the waistband. Strategic decreasing is used to shape the garment, particularly around marked centre front and back "seams" where decreases are worked on multiple rounds to create a tailored fit through the hip and thigh areas. The waistband section involves a change in stitch pattern and needle size to create a distinct ribbed finish. Pressing is recommended as part of the finishing process.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates knit and purl stitches as the foundation, with a stitch pattern that is maintained throughout the shaping process. The waistband features a rib pattern worked as *P1, K2* and **K2, P1** repeats, creating an elastic, fitted finish at the waist. Decreases are worked using the three together technique (work 3 tog) and single stitch decreases worked both through the back loop and in standard orientation, depending on placement relative to the marked centre seams.

Materials

The Rowan Trousers are knitted using Rowan Alpaca Soft DK yarn. The pattern requires 14 to 16 balls of 50-gram yarn, depending on the size being made. The photographed samples are shown in Simply White 201 and Rainy Day 210 colourways. Construction requires two circular needles: a 3¼mm (US 3) circular needle no more than 70 cm long for the waistband, and 3¾mm (US 5) circular needles—one no more than 40 cm long and one no more than 70 cm long—for the main leg sections. Additional finishing supplies include pressing equipment and materials for seaming if required.
