Product Description
Rowan Foxy Bay from Pebble Island is a wardrobe staple, reliable, unfussy, and perfect with jeans, joggers, or dresses. The fun part of this women’s cardigan is to pull it over your head the other way, and you have a v-neck sweater with button-back detail. So there are two garments in one for those days when you don’t know if you are coming or going. Rowan Pebble Island is a unique wool yarn produced from a flock of Polwarth Merino sheep raised and hand-sheared on the Falkland Islands. This soft worsted weight wool is incredibly versatile, working up beautifully into garments and accessories.

Rowan Foxy Bay Cardigan by Erika Knight
What is Being Made
The Rowan Foxy Bay is a knitted cardigan designed by Erika Knight, available in nine sizes to fit bust measurements ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 in) through 152-157 cm (60-62 in). The finished garment features actual bust measurements from 101 cm (39¾ in) to 183 cm (72 in), offering a range of fits for different body types and styling preferences.
Construction Techniques
This cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up method, meaning the pieces are knitted starting from the lower edges and working upward toward the shoulders and neckline. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, and pieces are seamed together after completion. This traditional construction approach allows for precise shaping and a professional finish.
The pattern employs short-row shaping at the shoulders to create a tailored fit and smooth shoulder line. Neck shaping is achieved through strategic decreases worked at the neckline edge on alternating rows and every fourth row, creating a gradual, flattering curve. The cardigan features a center front opening with a neckband, and is secured with four tortoise shell buttons measuring 2.2 cm.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Foxy Bay cardigan utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for a classic garment design. Key stitch techniques include:
- Knit and purl stitches for the primary fabric construction
- Slip stitch, knit, pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, K1, psso) for decorative decreases at the neckline edge
- Wrap and turn short-row shaping for shoulder construction, which creates smooth, three-dimensional shaping without visible gaps
- Stitch holders to preserve live stitches during construction, particularly for the back shoulder and center front neck stitches
Materials
The Rowan Foxy Bay is knitted using Rowan Pebble Island yarn, a 50-gram hank weight. Yarn quantities range from 10 hanks for the smallest size to 18 hanks for the largest size, allowing crafters to select the appropriate yardage for their chosen size. The pattern is photographed in the colorway Macaroni 029.
Construction requires one pair of 4½mm (US size 7) needles for the main fabric. The cardigan is finished with four tortoise shell buttons, each measuring 2.2 cm in diameter, which serve as both functional and decorative closures for the front opening.
