What is Being Made

The Rowan Snowdrop is an intermediate-level knitted poncho wrap designed to fit bust measurements of 71-97 cm, 102-127 cm, or 132-157 cm. When laid flat, the completed poncho wrap measures 64.5 to 76.5 cm wide and 150 to 170 cm long, depending on size. This versatile garment features a buttonhole band and is fastened with coconut buttons, making it both functional and decorative.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs several intermediate techniques to create visual interest and structure. The main construction uses a repeating stitch pattern that forms blocks across the fabric. Shaping is achieved through strategic cast-off and cast-on sequences to create the buttonhole band section. Increases are worked using the make-one (M1) method to expand stitch counts at specific points. The pattern also incorporates ribbed edging at both the cast-on and cast-off edges, which provides elasticity and a finished appearance. Pressing is recommended as part of the finishing process to enhance the final drape and appearance of the completed wrap.

Pattern Structure

The Snowdrop poncho is constructed using a 32-row pattern repeat that creates blocks of texture. Each pattern repeat forms two rows of blocks. The garment is worked in multiple sizes with stitch counts of 135, 147, or 159 stitches depending on the desired finished width. The pattern continues until 19 to 21 rows of blocks are completed, then additional rows are worked before shaping for the buttonhole band. After the buttonhole band is created, stitches are increased and the piece is finished with ribbed edging.

Materials Required

The Rowan Snowdrop calls for a blend of cotton and wool yarn in 50-gram balls. The yardage required varies by size: 9 balls for the smallest size, 11 balls for the medium size, and 12 balls for the largest size. The pattern was photographed in the colorway Naptime 204. Two pairs of needles are needed: one pair of 3½mm (US 4) needles and one pair of 4mm (US 6) needles. The poncho is fastened with 9 to 11 coconut buttons, each measuring 1.8 cm in diameter, depending on the size being made.

Tension and Sizing

Achieving the correct tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies a tension of 19 stitches and 32 rows to 10 cm when measured over the stitch pattern using 3½mm (US 4) needles. Three finished sizes are available, accommodating bust measurements from 28 to 62 inches (71 to 157 cm). The poncho wrap's finished length ranges from 59 to 67 inches depending on size.
