Rowan Thore Knitted Sweater by Arne & Carlos

What is Being Made

The Rowan Thore is a knitted sweater designed by Arne & Carlos, available in six sizes to fit bust/chest measurements from 81–86 cm (32–34 in) through 132–137 cm (52–54 in). The finished garment measurements range from 99 cm (39 in) to 150 cm (59 in) across the bust/chest, making this design suitable for a wide range of body sizes.

Techniques Used

This sweater is constructed using several intermediate knitting techniques that create visual interest and structure:

  • Bottom-up construction: The sweater is knitted from the bottom edge upward, allowing for easier fitting adjustments during the knitting process.
  • Worked flat: Rather than working in the round, this sweater is knitted flat on straight needles, with pieces seamed together after completion.
  • Intarsia patterning: Intarsia colorwork is incorporated throughout the design, requiring careful attention to color changes and pattern placement across the front and back pieces.
  • Seamed construction: Individual pieces (back, front, and sleeves) are knitted separately and then seamed together to create the finished garment.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The pattern instructions reference charted rows and stitch counts that vary by size. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases, particularly at the neck and shoulder areas. The back piece is worked straight for 168–198 rows depending on size, with back neck shaping created by working each side of the neck separately and decreasing at the neck edge. The front features more extensive neck shaping, with decreases worked over multiple rows and alternate rows to create a curved neckline. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through cast-off stitches worked at regular intervals across both back and front pieces.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Rowan Thore uses a combination of premium yarns to achieve its finished look:

  • Rowan Felted Tweed (Yarn A): Phantom shade, 7–12 x 50g balls depending on size, forms the main color base of the sweater.
  • Rowan Kidsilk Haze (Yarn B): Golden Poppy shade, 1 x 25g ball for all sizes, used as an accent color in the intarsia design.
  • Rowan Kidsilk Haze (Yarn C): Ruby shade, 2–3 x 25g balls depending on size, provides additional color contrast in the intarsia pattern.
  • Rowan Kidsilk Haze (Yarn D): Heavenly shade, 1–2 x 25g balls depending on size, completes the color palette for the intarsia work.

The pattern is worked on two needle sizes: 3.25 mm (US 3) needles and 4 mm (US 6) needles, allowing for gauge control and varied fabric density throughout the sweater.

Design Notes

This is a craft-skill-level pattern, indicating it is suitable for knitters with intermediate experience who are comfortable working with multiple colors, reading charts, and managing seamed construction. The combination of Rowan Felted Tweed with the lighter Kidsilk Haze yarns creates textural contrast while the intarsia colorwork adds visual sophistication to the finished sweater.
